Nine Rapes Reported at Army Center Where Teen Soldier Trained and Tragically Passed Away

Nine cases of rape and several other sexual offenses have been reported to the police at the Harrogate military college, where Jaysley-Louise Beck, a teenage soldier, tragically took her own life in 2021. The revelations shed light on a deeply troubling environment within the college.

Jaysley-Louise Beck, who trained at Harrogate military college, reportedly had a tumultuous and ‘toxic’ relationship with a former instructor lasting 20 months before her tragic death at the age of 19.

According to North Yorkshire’s police and crime commissioner, a total of ‘thirteen sexual offenses’ were reported at the college between July 22, 2022, and August 17, 2023. These reports include nine counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, and two counts of voyeurism.

It is disheartening to note that Harrogate military college was previously rated as ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, making these revelations all the more distressing.

This disturbing situation isn’t isolated. In 2021, nine investigations were launched into the sexual abuse of 22 recruits at the college. Corporal Simon Bartram, found guilty of sexual assault and eight counts of cruel or indecent disgraceful conduct, was sentenced to 20 months of military detention in January 2023.

Gunner Beck joined the army in 2019 at the age of 16, commencing her recruit training at Harrogate before becoming a part of the 47 regiment, Royal Artillery.

An army report has acknowledged that Gunner Beck was subjected to sexual harassment, which was cited as a ‘factor’ in her tragic death. In the weeks leading up to her passing, she had messaged her ‘controlling’ superior to express her struggles, saying, ‘I can’t handle it any more. It’s weighing me down.’

Gunner Beck’s mother, Leighann McCready, revealed that her daughter initially cherished her role as a soldier but that the ongoing sexual harassment began to erode her enjoyment of the job. She described her daughter as being persistently downcast and weary of her boss’s behavior.

The boss in question had expressed a desire for a romantic relationship with Gunner Beck, but she did not share the same feelings and was already in a relationship. Over two months, he sent her more than 4,500 WhatsApp messages and voicemails, displaying controlling behavior and jealousy. Gunner Beck confided in a message that she was struggling to cope with the situation.

Leighann McCready had initially encouraged her daughter to report her boss’s behavior, but Gunner Beck hesitated due to her prior experience with the army’s handling of a sexual assault complaint against another senior colleague. In that earlier incident, she was allegedly forced to leave an army training center bar late at night and hide in the toilets after being targeted.

The report indicates that the individual involved received a minor sanction and was instructed to write a letter of apology to the teenager. This response has raised serious concerns about the army’s handling of such cases.

In response to these revelations, an Army spokesperson expressed condolences to Gunner Jaysley-Louise Beck’s family and friends and stated that further comments would be deemed inappropriate until after the inquest. The distressing situation underscores the urgent need for a thorough investigation and accountability within the military institution.
