Nile Michael Wilson, a former artistic gymnast for Great Britain, enjoyed a prosperous athletic career. He won a bronze medal in the men’s horizontal bar competition at the 2016 Summer Olympics, in addition to winning a silver medal with the British team at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships—the first men’s team medal in British gymnastics history.
Moreover, he was the first Englishman to win the European Championship in horizontal bars. He took home the all-around championship at the 2018 Commonwealth Games after winning five times overall.
Wilson’s gymnastics career, however, was hampered by injuries, including a left ankle ligament damage that required surgery in 2017. Despite having ailments, he continued to compete, finishing sixth in the all-around final at the 2017 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.
Wilson announced his retirement from competitive gymnastics on January 14, 2021, mostly citing health problems brought on by the sport. After retiring, Wilson talked about the abusive culture in British gymnastics.
He admitted that coaches had emotionally tormented, scared, and mistreated him while he was in training. Wilson waited to speak up until after he had retired because of fear that doing so would have a negative impact on his career, like getting cut from the British Olympic team.
On a happier note, Wilson was named the victor of the fifteenth season of ITV’s Dancing on Ice on March 12, 2023.
