Author and high-wire artist. He’s renowned for his high-wire acts that don’t have a safety net. He is the first person to walk a tightrope strung straight over Niagara Falls, and he holds nine Guinness World Records for different acrobatic feats. As a youngster, Nik Wallenda, a seventh-generation member of The Flying Wallendas family, performed in numerous circus performances. He made his professional tightrope walking debut at the age of thirteen. In 1998, he decided to make a profession out of high-wire walking after joining family members in a seven-person pyramid on the wire. Wallenda was a member of the world’s first seven-person high-wire pyramid in 2001. He performed with his family at different places from 2002 to 2005 before establishing his own group in 2005. He performed alongside Bello Nock in a double version of the Wheel of Steel that he helped create in 2007 and 2008. He established new personal bests for highest and longest tightrope walks in 2009, accomplishing 15 walks over 100 feet (30 metres) in the air.
Wallenda established Guinness World Records for the longest and highest bicycle ride in 2008, when he rode a high-wire 250-foot (76 m) ride at 135 feet (41 m) above the earth in New Jersey. In 2010, he almost doubled the previous height record, reaching 260 feet (79 m). He set a new personal best by tightrope walking over 2,000 feet (610 metres) in a single performance on the same day in 2010. Wallenda broke a world record by performing on the Wheel of Death above the Tropicana Casino and Resort’s 23-story tower in 2011. Wallenda and his mother tightrope walked between the two towers of the Condado Plaza Hotel in Puerto Rico later that year. The feat was a re-enactment of the one that killed Nik’s great-grandfather and main source of inspiration, Karl Wallenda. Wallenda hung from a helicopter 250 feet (76 metres) above the earth on June 10, 2011, using just his teeth to hang on. Wallenda crossed Niagara Falls after a two-year legal struggle involving both sides of the Canada–United States boundary.
