Nicole Fiorentino is an American bass guitarist who was born in Ludlow, Massachusetts, the United States as Nicole Margaret Fiorentino. Originally a touring member of the alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins (replacing Ginger Pooley and her temporary replacement Mark Tulin), she became an official member in 2010.
She performs on the band’s albums Teargarden by Kaleidyscope (2009) and Oceania (2012). Fiorentino departed the band in the year 2014. Before joining the Smashing Pumpkins, she was a member of Radio Vago, Chicago alternative act Veruca Salt, Spinnerette, Twilight Sleep as well as the Light FM, the last of which opened for Billy Corgan’s one-off band Backwards Clock Society in November 2009.
Within a February 17, 2011, post on Smashing Pumpkins’ Facebook page, Fiorentino claimed she was among the girls on the cover of the Pumpkins’ 1993 album Siamese Dream. Although it was received by many fans to have been in jest, several news sources as well as a portion of the fan community believed this to be a genuine claim.
Rolling Stone suggested that Corgan had “decided to pull a Twitter prank”. Former SmashingPumpkins.com webmaster, Paul Friemel, later claimed that both cover models had been located in the year 2007 and that neither was Fiorentino.
In the year 2010, Fiorentino started working alongside Meghan Toohey under the group name The Cold and Lovely. In the year 2012, their debut album was released after it was funded through Kickstarter. The album produced one single and video for the song “Not With Me” released on April 24. The following year, on September 24, 2013, The Cold and Lovely released their sophomore record entitled “Ellis Bell EP”.
In October 2013, the Australian alt-rock band The Red Paintings announced Fiorentino would be performing with them as part of their new ‘Wasps’ stage show premiere live on AXS TV, October 7.
Fiorentino spent most of 2014 working with The Cold and Lovely. The group played an SXSW tour, supporting the re-release their Ellis Bell EP. They recorded a follow-up EP with new songs. They went on a summer tour of the U.S. East Coast.
In May 2014, Fiorentino provided backing vocals to the London band, The Microdance’s début album New Waves of Hope. In the fall of 2014, Fiorentino joined the band Night Terrors of 1927 on their fall tour.
In September 2014, Corgan stated in an interview with AlternativeNation.net that both Fiorentino and bandmate Mike Byrne were no longer members of The Smashing Pumpkins, citing different levels of commitment to the Smashing Pumpkins. However, Fiorentino and Corgan remain on amicable terms.

Both members joined The Pumpkins in the late aughts and both performed on 2009’s Teargarden by Kaleidyscope and 2012’s Oceania. Currently, bass duties are being handled by Sierra Swan and drums by original member Jimmy Chamberlain.
BlastEcho reached out to both Fiorentino and Byrne to better understand why they’re no longer Pumpkins, but only Fiorentino responded. Over email, Fiorentino confirmed that she was let go by Corgan but that “the circumstances look very different from my perspective than from Billy’s.” “I know my heart was in it 150% ‘til the end,” she wrote, “and no one can tell me differently. It was my whole life.”
Fiorentino speculates that Corgan believed her other band, The Cold and Lovely, was becoming a distraction from her role in The Pumpkins. “That was the general vibe that I inferred,” she wrote. “But the thing is, I never focused on The Cold and Lovely unless I was on break from (The Pumpkins). It never once conflicted.”
“And I always had such a great relationship with SP fans and felt like I had more of a presence online than anyone else in the band, constantly promoting just by being in touch with the fan base,” she wrote. “I don’t know how much more one can be committed to a band.” She says she’s no longer in touch with Corgan but bears no ill will toward the head Pumpkin.
After leaving The Pumpkins, Fiorentino took some time off before going on tour with Night Terrors of 1927. She’s also done session work for a U.K. band named The Microdance and devoted more time to The Cold and Lovely, which released a new album last year called What Will I Become.
“The theme (of the album)is all about transformation and this idea of being able to create your life when you have no idea what is next for you,” she says. “It’s terrifying but very exciting as well.”
