Butt, 36, enjoyed a last big pay day when he signed for Hong Kong-based South China football club last November to play in the BMA First Division. The competitive midfielder played for Manchester United for 11 years from 1993 to 2004 and then for Newcastle United, who he captained to the Championship title and promotion in 2009-10 before retiring from English football. He scored a goal, missed a penalty and set up the last-minute winner in his first game in Hong Kong but was unable to help his side make up sufficient ground to win the league. Butt started to feature regularly in Manchester United’s first team in 1994. He will have earned about £600,000 for his Far East sojourn.
