Swardson was born to Pamela and Roger Eric Swardson in Minneapolis, Minnesota US. He went St. Paul Central High and began acting at 16 years of age. After graduating in 1996 he opted to pursue stand-up comedy instead of going to college. At 18 years he started performing standup comedy and attending open mic nights at a Minneapolis comedy club known as Acme Comedy Co. Later he performed at Knuckleheads, a defunct club located in the Mall of America.
After receiving some publicity within comedy circles Swardson was nominated to perform stand-up at the US Comedy Arts Festival by the time he was 20.
