‘Slaughterhouse Rulez,’ the Simon Pegg/Nick Frost Monster Comedy Nobody is Talking About

Adopted From:bloody-disgusting.com
Published: January 15, 2019

You’d think buddy comedy duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost making their return to horror would be pretty major news in the horror community in particular, as Pegg and Frost worked their way into all of our hearts back in 2004 with Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead. They subsequently, along with Wright, rounded out the “Cornetto Trilogy” with Hot Fuzz and The World’s End, and they also reunited on the big screen in Greg Mottola’s underrated Paul. But Pegg and Frost’s latest collaboration, well, it has oddly been slipping under radars.

First announced two years ago, the Crispian Mills-directed horror-comedy Slaughterhouse Rulez is the first film under Pegg and Frost’s new movie/TV production banner Stolen Picture, and it was actually already released over in the UK this past Halloween. A release here in the States hasn’t yet been announced, which is perhaps why the film hasn’t been getting all that much coverage up to this point. In any event, we’re talking about a movie wherein Pegg and Frost battle subterranean monsters, so we should all probably be excited… right?!

As Pegg explained to Digital Trends last year, “It’s sort of a horror comedy. It felt like the right thing for Nick and I to have as our first collaboration with Stolen Picture. It’s about a private school in the U.K. which sells off parts of its land to a fracking company, and the fracking company then unleashes a subterranean monster that terrorizes the school. It’s a big metaphor for the U.K. privatizing things, and it’s mixed up with some ridiculous, sloppy horror. So it’s right up our street.“

In Slaughterhouse Rulez…

“Welcome to Slaughterhouse, an elite boarding school where boys and girls are groomed for power and greatness…and they’re about to meet their match. This ancient and ordered world is about to be shaken to its foundations – literally – when a controversial frack site on prized school woodland causes seismic tremors, a mysterious sinkhole, and an unspeakable horror to be unleashed. Soon a new pecking order will be established as the pupils and teachers alike become locked in a bloody battle for survival…”

If the trailer is any indication, Slaughterhouse Rulez is something of an *unofficial* new installment in the “Cornetto Trilogy,” feeling like an extension of Edgar Wright’s Pegg/Frost universe despite the fact that Wright himself was not actually involved in the production. The aforementioned Paul, with Pegg and Frost in the leading roles, had much the same feel to it.

Pegg. Frost. Practical monsters. Give us that release date already, will ya Sony?!

While we wait, check out the trailer below. And expect the UK Blu-ray on March 11th.
