Nicholas Donnelly, a Grange Hill actor best remembered for his appearances in Mr. MacKenzie and The Bill, died at the age of 83.

Nicholas Donnelly also played Sergeant Johnny Wills in roughly 200 episodes of the BBC police drama Dixon Of Dock Green, which starred Jack Warner as George Dixon.

The hero of the iconic BBC school drama – one of the longest-running programs in British television history – died in the early hours of the morning.

The guy who played Mr. MacKenzie, a teacher on the series for eight years, died in Nicholas’s sleep over the weekend. He hadn’t been sick.

In a statement, Donnelly’s family said, “He was a terrific father and grandfather, a kind, compassionate, and lovely man.”

“He was also a delight to know, and he was humorous and fantastic at telling stories, acting out all the characters.”

Mr. Nicholas Donnelly met his wife Arun during his National Service in Germany in the late 1950s, and the couple has been married for over 60 years.

They were the parents of five grandchildren, two sons, and twin daughters.

In 1993, Donnelly and his wife relocated to Hastings to work as lay pastors at St Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church.

His death comes only days after it was revealed that Grange Hill creator Phil Redmond was contemplating a cinematic adaptation of the now-defunct children’s television show.

The actor, who supports Queens Park Rangers, was born in Kensington, west London, and has previously appeared on television in cameo roles in Roger Moore’s The Saint.
