NFL Supplemental Draft 2023 will return after a three-year hiatus. It was last conducted in 2019 when Arizona Cardinals picked Jalen Thompson.
NFL supplement draft date for 2023 is scheduled for 11th July. The last one in 2019 took place on 10th July. Individuals ineligible for the regular draft can submit an application to see their name for the event.
It is up to the league office to verify the applicant and declare if they are qualified for the draft. One primary criterion for the applicants is that they must have graduated high school three years prior.
Cris Carter was adjourned from his senior year in college football because of his agreement with an agent. Nonetheless, he achieved greatness in NFL.
Likewise, not declaring for the regular draft because of their preference towards a franchise was the primary reason many players entered the supplemental draft in the 1980s and earlier years.
The rule was adjusted in 1990, and since 1993, only those ineligible for academic reasons and out-of-college eligibility were permitted.
What Is The NFL Supplement Draft?
NFL Supplement Draft is the second chance for players deemed ineligible for the regular draft. It gives talent a platform that would otherwise waste his year.
BREAKING: The #NFL Supplemental Draft has been scheduled for Tuesday, July 11., per @dpbrugler of @TheAthletic.
The #NFL has not held the event since 2019.

This event is entirely different from the regular one. Every team gets an order in the regular draft and chooses a player from the pool.
But there is no designated pick for any team. Instead, they have to place a bid for the athlete in exchange for a round of their next year’s draft.
Suppose Minnesota Vikings bid their second-round pick on a footballer and attain him. The Vikings will give up their second-round choice in the 2024 NFL Draft.
The teams are divided into groups based on the last campaign’s performance. The bidding process occurs that way, and the team who bids an earlier place gets the player.
Order
NFL Supplement Draft order divides the 32 teams into three groups. It follows a reverse order, favoring the ones with the most losses.
The first bracket includes the teams with less than half a dozen wins in the 2022 season.
Likewise, the second category consists of those who did not make it to the postseason.
The last group is comprised of the 14 teams who played playoff games.
They use a weighted lottery system to give the teams numbering to place the bid for the footballer. A tiebreaker is used if two or more franchises have the same losing record.
In the 2023 Draft, Carolina Panthers selected Bryce Young as the No. 1 overall. But, the first selection place initially belonged to Chicago Bears.
The Bears were the worst-performing team in the previous campaign. They had only three wins.
Similarly, the first group for the event on the 11th of July, with six or fewer wins, will be as follows:
- Chicago Bears (3-14)
- Houston Texans (3-13)
- Arizona Cardinals (4-13)
- Indianapolis Colts (4-12)
- Denver Broncos (5-12)
- Los Angeles Rams (5-12)
- Las Vegas Raiders (6-11)
Players
NFL Supplement Draft players Bernie Kosar, Cris Carter, Bobby Humphrey, Rob Moore, Mike Wahle, Jamal Williams, Ahmad Brooks, and Josh Gordon are Pro-Bowlers.
Cris Carter belongs to the 1987 class and is the most successful in the history of supplement choices. He is the only Hall of Famer among the forty-six supplementary picks.
Philadelphia Eagles chose the Wide Receiver in exchange for their 4th round selection. However, his career-altering days were spent with Minnesota Vikings from 1990 to 2001. During that period, he was the NFL receiving touchdowns leader in 1995, 1997, and 1999.
The 1999 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on 2nd February 2013. He made the Pro Bowl from 1993 to 2000. His no. 80 was retired by the Vikings. He is also a member of the Minnesota Vikings Ring of Honor.
This year, the eyes are all set on Wide Receiver Milton Wright. CBS Sports reports that the Purdue performer became ineligible for the 2023 Draft due to academic troubles. It also cost him the 2022 college football season.
Nevertheless, Wright is now available for the draft in July. During the 2021 campaign, he received 57 passes for 732 yards. His average was 12.8, and he scored 7 touchdowns.
We may hear him getting into an NFL roster soon.
Picks
NFL Supplement Draft picks encompass eight Pro Bowlers and one Pro Football Hall of Famer. 15 athletes have been selected via this event in the 21st Century.
Since 2002, there have been a dozen of the selection process. Houston Texans took Guard Milford Brown and Running Back Tony Hollings, in 2002 and 2003. They forfeited the 6th and 2nd round selections in the consecutive drafts.
Similarly, Miami Dolphins brought Manuel Wright in 2005 in exchange for the 5th-round choice. Cincinnati Bengals won Ahmad Brooks in 2006 for the 3rd round preference.
Some other names who made it into the NFL through this selection procedure are:
| Paul Oliver (2007) | San Diego Chargers (4th Round) |
| Jared Gaither (2007) | Baltimore Ravens (5th Round) |
| Jeremy Jarmon (2009) | Washington Redskins (3rd Round) |
| Harvey Unga (2010) | Chicago Bears (7th Round) |
| Josh Brent (2010) | Dallas Cowboys (7th Round) |
| Terrelle Pryor (2011) | Oakland Raiders (3rd Round) |
| Josh Gordon (2012) | Cleveland Browns (2nd Round) |
| Isaiah Battle (2015) | St. Louis Rams (5th Round) |
Likewise, there have been instances when teams have given up their first-round pick to get a sportsperson on their roster. All the individuals who were brought in for such precious draft positions are as follows:
- QB Dave Wilson – New Orleans Saints, 1981
- QB Bernie Kosar – Cleveland Browns, 1985
- LB Brian Bosworth – Seattle Seahawks, 1987
- QB Steve Walsh – Dallas Cowboys, 1989
- QB Timm Rosenbach – Pheonix Cardinals, 1989
- RB Bobby Humphrey – Denver Broncos, 1989
- WR Rob Moore – New York Jets, 1990
- QB Dave Brown – New York Giants, 1992
Supplement Draft Results
NFL Supplement Draft results for 2018 saw Sam Beal and Adonis Alexander heading to New York Giants and Washington Redskins. They forfeited the 3rd and 6th picks.
As mentioned earlier, ineligible sportspersons are provided a second chance to make it into the league. It is up to the franchises to decide whether they want to bid or not on the player.
Since 1977, a total of forty-six players have been taken by franchises in the Supplement Draft. Al Hunter was the first person to achieve that feat.
Seattle Seahawks took for the 4th round pick of the 1978 draft.
The 1989 Supplement Draft has the record number of footballers taken by teams. Steve Walsh (Dallas Cowboys), Timm Roenbach (Phoenix Cardinals), Bobby Humphrey (Denver Broncos), Brett Young (Buffalo Bills), and Mike Lowman (Dallas Cowboys) were selected.
