NFL Roster Cut Dates 2023
NFL roster cut dates is slated on Tuesday, 29 August for the 2023 season. Teams have to finalize their roster by 4 p.m. ET.
The teams will have to undergo a massive cut before the scheduled cut date. The General Manager and Coaching Staff have a big responsibility to determine who will be on the final 53-man roster.
Star performers in the last season and this year’s preseason will have a greater probability to make it into the final roster, barring any injuries or suspension. The injured athletes will sit on the IR list, and once fit to play, they will have to wait some weeks before becoming eligible again.
The size reduction had different regulations and applications in the past, but the rules changed recently this year after 25 franchises submitted the proposal to change the deadline day for roster cuts.
NFL Roster Cut Deadline
NFL cuts deadline will only be mandated on one single date in August from the 2023 season.
The league altered its rules regarding the multiple cut dates in the past, including the 2022 season. Before, the teams had the trim their player numbers from 90 to 85 on 16 August. Then, further trimming to 80 was done on 23 August.
Now, the final trim came on 30 August, when the clubs saw their player number decrease from 80 to 53. So, it was essential for teams to keep on decreasing their players’ size during the pre-season weeks too. However, from 2023, one single date is enough for the entire trim.
Although the rules have changed to one date, teams still have the freedom to trim their roster before the designated date.
For instance, Chicago Bears can trim down all 37 players on the given date, or start their process from the pre-season weeks. The better part is that the Bears don’t have to mandatorily cut the player numbers on multiple deadline dates.
When Is The NFL Trade Deadline 2023?
NFL Trade deadline 2023 is scheduled at 4 pm New York time on 31 October.
All the clubs will cease their trading activities once the designated date comes in 2023. The teams will have to look for any possible new recruits and negotiate a contract with them right before the 4:00 pm strike in the EST time zone.
After the trade deadline date, the club has few options related to their players. Before 14 November, clubs will have to sign any Transition or Franchise players that are still unsigned. Likewise, the team has to sign Unrestricted free agents who have received the UFA Tender before 14 November too.
Any players not successfully traded or signed before 31 October will not get to play for the remainder of the 2023 season. The same situation applies to the unsigned free agents before the November date.
Epic Trade Deadline Deals In NFL History
NFL Trade deadline deals include 1. Von Miller to Los Angeles Rams and 2. Marshawn Lynch to Seattle Seahawks.
Linebacker Von Miller played at the Denver Broncos from 2011, until he got traded to the LA Rams in 2021 at the deadline day. The trade became a success, as Miller went on to create 11 sacks in the entire season, and helped Rams win the Super Bowl LVI.
Similarly, RB Marshawn Lynch’s deadline day trade from the Bills to the Seahawks in 2010 paved the way for his success with 2 Super Bowl appearances and 4 Pro Bowls.
Another greatest trade on the deadline was made by Dallas Cowboys who traded Herschel Walker for Five draft picks in 1989. These draft picks included Russell Maryland and Emmitt Smith who aided to make the 1990s Cowboys dynasty.
