Jets throwback uniforms 2023 will pay tribute to the “New York Sack Exchange” days. The unveiling event will take place on the 24th of July.
The “New York Sack Exchange” was the nickname given to the defensive line of the Jets, famous for making sacks.
The ensemble of Mark Gastineau, Marty Lyons, Joe Klecko, and Abdul Salaam dominated the early 1980s with their sacks. Klecko finally enters the Hall of Fame in 2023 from the Senior category alongside Chuck Howley and Ken Riley.
The four registered 66 unofficial sacks in 1981. This led to the inclusion of sacks as an official NFL statistic.
When they were invited to ring the New York Stock Exchange opening bell, the word sack replaced stock, and hence the name was invented.
The information about the throwback attire leaked via a video where TE C.J. Uzomah was seen dressed in apparel with green stripes. It was from the Jets’ indoor practice facility.
Netizens only saw a glimpse of the attire, and the news has been making headlines since then.
1980s Jets Uniform
New York Jets 80s uniform was introduced in 1978. The team sported the attire for twelve years before modifying the design in 1990.
The primary color used in the home kit was Kelly green. Before that, a lighter hue of green was used.
The design provided a fresher look with two white stripes on the arms. The neck rim and numbers were also white.
The Kelly green jersey was paired with white trousers. The socks were white and green.
Another exciting aspect of the set was the introduction of the Kelly green helmet with a white facemask. It consisted of the white lettering of the new ‘JETS’ logo.
The new emblem introduced with the uniform in 1978 had a silhouette of a jet airplane with bold green lettering. It was used as the prominent emblem till 1997.
Similarly, the road attire comprises white tops and bottoms. The arm stripes, collar border, name, and numbering were filled with Kelly green.
The fans loved the away kit, and the team wore it for most of its games, no matter home or away fixtures.
New York Jets New Uniforms
Jets new uniform 2023 was made official on 4th April 2019. They uploaded a video pre-release, which actor JB Smoove narrated.
The release event took place in Gotham Hall. Quarterback Sam Darnold, Wide Receiver Quincy Enuwa, Tight End Chris Herdon, and Safety Jamal Adams presented the revamped apparel.
It included three fresh sets: Spotlight White, Gotham Green, and Stealth Black. Nike designed all.
The Spotlight White was white, as the name suggests. Both jersey and pants were white. The pants had a tapered stripe of medium green from hip to mid-knee on the sides.
The fonts of player and team names and numbering were kept bold and filled with medium green. They added black as the third color in the borders.
The horizontal sharp spikes came from both sides around the arm to the chest. Instead of the signature ‘JETS,’ they used ‘New York’ above the numbers on the front.
Likewise, the Gotham Green donned medium green, referred to as the Gotham Green. White is the secondary hue.
The Stealth Black has black as the central tint, with white and medium green as secondary colors.
Another significant aspect was the deep metallic emerald green helmet with a black facemask. The redesigned football graphics with JETS above it was seen on both sides of the headshell.
Uniform Colors
New York Jets uniform colors in 1963 were green and white. Since then, the team has centered their costume around these two colors.
From 1960 to 1962, the franchise was called Titans of New York. The original shade was navy blue and gold.
The tops had numbers and names filled with gold, while the gold pants had two parallel blue stripes bordered with white.
The headgear was navy blue with no logo. It had a single gold stripe at the center.
The away kit was a white jersey with navy blue numerals.
Since becoming the New York Jets in 1963, green and white have been their go-to shades. With a few iterations in green shade and altering pants from white and green, there has been no significant color overhaul.
The present-day costume from 2019 has white, Gotham green, and black colors.
Uniform History
NY Jets uniform history dates back to the classic Kelly green and white, which debuted in 1963, replacing the purple and gold.
The choice of tint is credited to Sonny Werblin, who was born on Saint Patrick’s Day. Werblin purchased the franchise from Harry Wismer in 1963, renamed the team, and made a massive change to the color scheme.
The primary design had green on most of the jersey, except the white arms. The numerals were white on green and vice versa. The arms sported numerals.
The pants were white, and the white helmet had two green stripes in the middle. The road apparel was white with green on the arms.
A significant overhaul came in 1978. The separate color for arms vanished. It saw the use of stripes at the end of the arms. The road kit used green pants.
Likewise, a rendition of the retro look made its way in 1998. A darker green kit reflecting the design from 1963 to 1997 was used.
We saw green pants returning in the home set in 2002. In 2003, it was paired in away attire. A similar approach was used from 2012 to 2018 in both home and away attire.
The latest redesign occurred in 2019 when three new sets were introduced.
During all these modifications, the helmet remained white from 1963 to 1977. A change to green was seen from 1978 to 1997.
It was changed to white in 11998 and used till 2018. Once again, it was changed to green in 2019.
Jets 90s Uniform
New York Jets 90s uniform debuted in 1990 and saw the addition of a black hue. It was the first time a third tint was used besides green and white.
The numerals, names, and stripes had a black border in the home kit. The socks had white stripes on the green part, and the hard hat had a black facemask.
A similar approach of black tint was followed for the road costume.
Green pants were introduced in the away set. It was the first time the franchise had shifted its focus from white and used green bottoms.
However, in 1995, they brought back the white pants.
New Administrator And New Look
In 1997, Bill Parcells took the role of General Manager at the franchise and started the plan of re-forming the Jets’ identity.
Parcells became the head coach of the team in 1983 before leaving for the New England Patriots job in 1993. He returned in 1997 as an executive and head coach.
He brought back the retro look prevalent from 1963 to 1977. A darker shade of green called hunter green was implemented, and a white helmet with a new logo was used.
The black border was removed. The concept remained unchanged until 2018, with few iterations in 2011.
