Nev Schulman: Early Life and Education

Yaniv Schulman was born on September 26, 1984 in New York City, New York. His name Yaniv comes from a Hebrew word, where it means “He will prosper”, and boy will he prosper. Nev comes from a mixed ethnicity with a German, Polish and Jewish Jewish background. He also has an older brother, Ariel Schulman, who like him is an actor and filmmaker.

From a young age, Schulman liked to dance. He continued taking dance classes for 5 years and performed for the company called “Instituto Nacional de Danza”. For his education, Nev joined Sarah Lawrence College. He had big dreams and was studying dance and photography. However, in April 2006, he was expelled from his university after assaulting a female student. He tried to persuade the university to take him back, but to no avail.

Nev Schulman: Career

After having to drop out of college, Schulman began working with the New York City Ballet Community. Her role for the community was a dance photographer and this helped her to get more work for major newspapers like “Vogue”, “The New York Times”, “New York Sun”, etc. Next, Nec co-founded The Young Leadership Committee of the youth organization “Stop Violence Out”.

After a period of brief stints, his big break finally came in 2010. It was for a documentary that would change his fortunes. The documentary was filmed by the elder Schulman and Henry Joost. The documentary Catfish was about Schulman’s friendship through Facebook with a girl, Abby. Schulman later befriended her mother and became attracted to her sister Megan. This documentary spawned a new MTV Catfish: The TV Show. For the show, Nev along with his colleagues try to introduce couples who have been dating online.

Nev Schulman: Catfished

We mentioned that Schulman fell in love with his internet crush, Megan. It even turned into a relationship and lasted 6 months. The two shared many personal details during this brief period. This for some reason caught the attention of his older brother, Ariel. So Ariel together with Henry started filming the whole story. The three of them thought Megan was keeping things from them, so they went on a surprise visit to Megan’s family in Michigan.

Nev later learned that this relationship was built on deception. It turned out to be a bitter experience for Schulman, but it helped send a message to everyone about the dark side of social media. The only good thing that came out of this was this documentary Catfish that many young viewers could relate to.
