Néstor Gastón Carbonell is a well-known American actor, director, and screenwriter best known for his role as Luis Rivera in the NBC sitcom Suddenly Susan. He received additional acclaim for his roles as Richard Alpert in the ABC drama Lost, Sheriff Alex Romero in the A&E drama series Bates Motel, and Yanko Flores in the Apple TV+ drama series The Morning Show.
He also appeared in Christopher Nolan’s superhero blockbusters The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012) as Mayor Anthony Garcia.
Carbonell showed extraordinary talent early in his acting career by taking on roles that needed thick Hispanic accents, which he mimicked so convincingly that many thought it was his natural manner of speaking.
He did, however, confront the task of convincing Hollywood that he could play larger roles without an accent. His acting career began with a guest appearance as Alberto Cordova in As the World Turns, and he has since been in Law & Order, Melrose Place, A Different World, Reasonable Doubts, Good Advice, Brotherly Love, and The John Larroquette Show.
Carbonell’s commitment to the entertainment sector extended beyond performing to the screenplay. In 2000, he made his screenwriting debut and was featured in the comedic flick Attention Shoppers.
Throughout his career, he wowed audiences with recurrent appearances in TV shows such as Resurrection Blvd., The Tick, Kim Possible (as Seor Senior Jr.), Century City, Strong Medicine, and others.
Néstor Carbonell Eyeliner
Interviewers have frequently brought up Carbonell’s exceptionally dark eyelashes; both he and the Lost producers have emphasized that they are fully genuine and not artificially altered.
In a lighthearted spoof at the Lost panel at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con International, Carbonell imitated Christian Bale’s angry outburst when a makeup assistant gave him the wrong color makeup.
And in a Lost episode from season five, James “Sawyer” Ford calls Carbonell’s on-screen avatar “your buddy out there with the eyeliner.” Additionally, Carbonell’s character makes a joking comment about having “impossibly dark eyelashes” in the Psych episode titled “Shawn 2.0.”
