Neil Leslie Diamond was born to Jewish merchant parents in Brooklyn, New York, in 1941. Diamond was always interested in music as a child, and he joined the choir during his high school years, where he met a young Barbra Streisand.
He joined the fencing squad after moving to a new high school. When Neil Diamond re-joined Columbia Records in 1973, he consented to a deal that would pay him an enormous $1 million advance for each record—roughly $5.75 million in today’s dollars.
He received a huge $650,000 payment from the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas in 1975 in exchange for appearing at the debut of their brand-new, $10 million theater. In 1974, he had just published his album “Serenade.” In today’s currency, this payment would be worth close to $3 million.
Around the end of the 1970s, Diamond finished recording the album “September Morn,” but not long after that, he received a horrible medical diagnosis.
He was recognized for his musical accomplishments and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.
He underwent surgery to remove a spinal tumor in 1979 since it had severely compromised his legs and caused him to violently fall on stage.
Diamond made his acting debut in the 1980s in the film “The Jazz Singer.” Regrettably, Diamond’s lack of acting expertise led to the movie’s failure. He did, however, give a Superbowl performance during this decade.
Diamond continued to work on his music during the 1990s, putting out six studio albums. Around the millennium, Diamond’s career started to slow down, but he continued to put out albums and appear on programs like “American Idol.”
