Neal Allan Doughty (born July 29, 1946 in Evansville, Indiana) is an American keyboardist who is presently the band’s only surviving original member. In the autumn of 1967, he founded the band with founding drummer Alan Gratzer. Doughty has written or co-written many songs for REO Speedwagon, despite never being one of the band’s main composers. “Sky Blues” from 1973, “One Lonely Night” from 1984, and “Variety Tonight” from 1987 are among the songs for which he is the only composer. The last two songs were released as singles on Billboard, with “One Lonely Night” reaching the top 20. The Hammond Organ solo on “Roll With The Changes” and the honky-tonk piano work on “157 Riverside Avenue” are two of his most noteworthy performances. The beginning of “Can’t Fight This Feeling” is the most challenging and gratifying to play, according to him. On the opening sweep of “Ridin’ The Storm Out,” he can be heard using the Moog Synthesizer, which he was an early user of. He now travels with a Hammond B3 Organ routed via Leslie speaker cabinets, and uses synthesisers from Korg and Yamaha.
