National Housing Cooperative Union – Nachu

The National Housing Cooperative Union (Nachu) seeks to address poverty reduction through human habitat by providing training, education, technical, and financial services.

Nachu Works in rural and urban areas with low income populations. It has a country—wide presence in seven regions; Nairobi, Mt Kenya, Western, Coast, Eastern, Nyanza and the Rift Valley and currently works with 430 primary housing cooperatives (PHCS) with over 300,000 members.

It has developed a catalogue with housing costs for members and has also promoted the concept of incremental housing development to help members and their cooperatives to make projects affordable.

The union has mobilized resources both locally and internationally to support shelter development.

In 2007, Nachu was honoured by USAID, Canadian Housing Renewal Association (CHRA) & ICA for best practice. It has also received awards from the Ministry of Housing and UN Habitat
