Nate Newton: career and achievements

Washington Redskins:

Although he was in the 1983 USFL Territorial Draft from the Tampa Bay Bandits, he opted to sign with the Washington Redskins as an unpaid independent agent. He was suspended from training camp and hospitalized the same night he was in a serious car accident.

Tampa Bay Bandits:

Upon his release, he signed in what the USFL called a Territorial Draft with the Tampa Bay Bandits of the now-disbanded United States Soccer League, who drafted him in 1983.

Dallas Cowboys:

In 1986 Newton signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a free agent when the USFL folded.

His breakthrough came with the arrival of Jimmy Johnson as Cowboys coach in 1989, eventually moving him to the correct starting tackle position and putting pressure on him to improve his form after Johnson beat him in one run.

He went back to left guard in 1992, thanks to Erik Williams for having the best combination of players possible. Newton was a six-time Pro Bowler, he was in the game from 1992 to 1996 and again in 1998. Only Larry Allen has been to more Pro Bowls with the Cowboys on the offensive line. For six appearances each, he works with Rayfield Wright and John Niland. His ability to protect quarterback from Troy Aikman and the run block to back up Emmitt Smith helped the Cowboys win 3 Super Bowls in 1992, 1993 and 1995.

For more than a decade he has been one of the best shooting guards in the NFL. He was a very powerful player and was popular with other great players for some great matchups with Reggie White. Newton was one of the most exciting players in Cowboys history, despite playing in the trenches.

Police arrested him on March 21, 1991, in an illegal dog fight to which he contributed significantly. He himself owned 14 pit bulls.

Carolina Panthers:

His final NFL season with the Carolina Panthers was in 1999. He played as a backup point guard in seven games before going on injured reserve with a torn right triceps tendon.
