Natarsha Belling Weight Loss
Despite juggling a hectic job with two boys under five, newsreader Natarsha explains why she’s never been happier.
When it comes to health
I wish women didn’t concentrate on weight so much during and after pregnancy. I put on more than 20 kilos during my pregnancies with Harrison, five, and Hugo, three, but didn’t worry because I was focused on staying well and eating sensibly. As a society, we need to define women for their personality, their achievements and how they treat others – not on how they look! I think the most beautiful people in the world are those with a kind heart and a great sense of humor.
As a new mum, it can be so difficult about balancing everything
Your priority should be you and your baby’s health and happiness, not how many post-pregnancy kilos you’ve lost. Looking back, there were things I could have done differently. As a first-time mum, I didn’t listen to all the advice about getting plenty of sleep and eating well. Subsequently, I had a very challenging few months with Harrison! The second time around, I tried to sleep when Hugo did and focused more on healthy eating, which made a difference. Squeezing in more exercise is an ongoing New Year’s resolution. Running around after the boys is a 24/7 activity, and I occasionally fit in a quick walk, but that’s a rare luxury!
I know to listen to my body
If I push myself too hard and juggle too many commitments, I get sick and my body screams at me to stop. It’s also important to relax and celebrate the good times. My favorite way to do this is with a sleep-in on a Saturday when I’m not working, topped off with takeaway and a bottle of champagne for dinner.
I try to eat balanced meals, especially because our family is so busy. If things are busier than usual, the takeaway is a quick and easy option, but I try to cook as much as possible on weekends and freeze meals to use throughout the week. We don’t miss out on regular treats, though! The boys know that lollies, chocolate, and ice-cream are ‘sometimes’ rather than ‘everyday’ foods.
When it comes to getting kids to love home cooking
I’ve discovered that creativity is the answer. When I’m running late and the kids are having sausage sandwiches for their dinner, I’ll make a gingerbread man shape out of the bread with a cookie cutter and serve that with a plate of colorful vegetables. The only problem is when we go to a normal sausage sizzle and they ask me why there’s no gingerbread man bread! Like thousands of other families with young children, I’m constantly exhausted but enjoying every single moment. Every day they have me in fits of hysterics. It’s intense and I love it when peace and normality return to the house at 7.29 pm – when the boys finally pass out in their beds and I can collapse on the lounge!
Since having children, I’m more aware of my mortality
I want to be healthy and happy for as long as possible, so I can watch my boys grow. I’ve always dreamed of being a journalist, a wife, and a mother. I’ve fulfilled all three, so try to remind myself daily how incredibly blessed I am. While I love my work, the family keeps me grounded and reminds me of what’s most important – love, loyalty, and laughter. I hope to remain happy and healthy in the future, holding hands with my husband and watching our sons fulfilling their dreams.
