Nanyuki River Camel Camp Rooms, Facilities, Prices, Booking and Contacts

Nanyuki River Camel Camp

Description

Nanyuki River Camel Camp was established after a 12—year project working with camel-owning nomads in the remote semi-arid regions of Kenya.

The project’s team lived continuously amongst the nomads and, while helping them become more self reliant in food, learned much about their remarkable bush knowledge.

The Nanyuki River Camel Camp recreates this experience for visitors. The camp host introduces guests to the fascinating lives of pastoral nomads. There are 10 traditional Somali houses made from woven palm mats attached to wooden frames. There is also a dining banda, kitchen and communal bathrooms, all based around a campfire. There are also campsites and picnic spots. Both full board and self-catering are offered.

Activities and challenges are many and various. Both short and long camel rides are available. The ring quest is a series of challenges in woods and streams. Raft construction and racing are on offer. Excursions can be arranged to a cultural manyatta, wildlife reserve and animal orphanage.

Trekking and mountain climbing are also recommended. Nanyuki River Camel Camp is owned and managed by Field Outdoor Enterprises, registered in 2008. The company aims to promote and develop ecotourism as an alternative livelihood for pastoralists who may no longer be able to survive on livestock alone.
