Nadine Burke Harris Youth Wellness

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are characterized as preventive and traumatic early experiences; they may range from exposure to violence, deprivation and neglect, to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. As a consequence, the probability of “risky health habits, chronic health conditions, low life expectancy, and early death” in adulthood can increase. Exposure to ACEs may result in toxic stress, which differs from normal stress because it is chronic and persistent, resulting in physiological antagonistic responses that can contribute to poor health outcomes in life.

The Youth Wellness Center (CYW) seeks to improve the health of children and teenagers by reducing the effects of negative childhood experiences. The CYW’s key target is that “by 2028, every pediatrician in the US must test for Adverse Childhood Experiences.”In particular, they target ACEs in the Bayview / Hunter ‘s Point neighborhood of San Francisco, a historically underserved region with a poverty rate of 39 percent in 2010. In addition to high crime, the CYW found that exposure to ACEs[increases the risk of negative health consequences in this community. We use a combination of ACE risk screening (via questionnaire), care management, and multidisciplinary (primary care, psychotherapy, psychiatry, and biofeedback) treatment.

Nadine Burke Harris Career

In 2008, after reading Vincent J. Felitti’s “The Connection of Adverse Childhood Experiences to Adult Health: Transforming Gold Into Lead,” Burke Harris realized that the traumatic experiences of her patients had a detrimental impact on their present and future health. In 2011 the American Academy of Pediatrics named her to the Resilience Project Advisory Committee.

Between 2010 to 2012, Burke Harris co-founded the Adverse Childhood Experiences initiative in San Francisco’s Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood, with colleagues from the Tipping Point Foundation, including Daniel Lurie, Kamala Harris, Victor G. Carrion, Lenore Anderson, Lisa Pritzker, and Katie Albright.

From this effort, the Youth Wellness Center was established in 2012 to create a clinical model that recognizes the health effects of adverse experiences and effectively addresses toxic stress in children. The multidisciplinary approach focuses on avoiding and undoing the effects of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in biological, physiological, and neurodevelopment. The Center provides programs for children and families that provide primary health care, mental wellbeing, and wellness, science, policy, education, and community and family support.

She spoke at a TED event titled TEDMED in San Francisco in 2014. As of June 2020, her talk, “How Childhood Trauma Affects Health Across a Lifetime,” had reached more than 7.2 million viewers on TED.com. In 2018 Burke Harris released her first book The Deepest Well: Managing Childhood Adversity’s Long-Term Effects, published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. California Governor Gavin Newsom named her as the first surgeon general of the state on 21 January 2019. She was sworn in on 11 February 2019.
