Mxit (pronounced “mix it”) is a free instant messaging software that lets you chat, share files and photos with friends on mobile phones and laptops. Mxit runs on multiple mobile and computer platforms. It was created in such a way that it can connect to Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, Google Talk, Facebook, AIM or Windows Live Messenger contacts along with its own standard protocol, so you can be on any of these platforms or on any of these Platforms to interact with your friends, the Mxit platform itself can interact with millions of people.
The software application was developed by Mxit(Pty) Ltd. in South Africa. In 2007, the company commissioned its European data center in Frankfurt to handle international traffic from the servers in South Africa. Kenya was the first country outside of South Africa to launch Mxit and as such, Kenyans had access to all features.
In 2013, a study by World Wide Worx showed that Mxit had 7.4 million monthly active subscribers as of July 2013. Over six million of these were South Africans. However, the software traveled the world. The company has operated in numerous international markets including Malaysia, India, Indonesia, UK, USA, Nigeria, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy and Portugal.
However, the service had some problems. For example, a test using the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Secure Messaging Scorecard scored 0 out of 7. Due to the lack of encryption technology, but also due to these other reasons, it could not even get a minimum of results.
- Users could not verify contact identities
- Previous messages were not secure if the encryption keys were stolen
- The code was not open to independent verification
- The security design was not properly documented
- Recently there was no independent code audit
Unfortunately, before the company could bail out, for all these problems, the founding company announced its closure on October 23, 2015. The intellectual property rights and technology assets were then donated to The Reach Trust, an independent non-profit organization. However, the last blow came on September 30, 2016, when it was announced that the service would be discontinued.
Part of what makes Mxit great is that it offers some of the standard features of a modern instant messaging client, e.g. B. a contact list, file transfers and an integrated photo sharing system that uses the built-in camera of a mobile phone. Profile photos, tabbed conversations, and message formatting are also supported.
While using Mxit you can easily add contacts, enter their mobile number or a username and as a user you can change your availability and mood in the menu on the client. You can also share a chat room and see more expressions using emoticons.
