Mutomo Mission Hospital Details, Services, Facilities and Contacts

Mutomo Mission Hospital Description

Mutomo Mission Hospital is a medium size non-profit Misson, a secondary hospital that provides comprehensive medical and surgical services and facilities in aligning with the requirements of the Department of Health Service Support of Public Health Ministry. It is located in Kawelu Sub-location, Kibwea location, Mutomo Division, Kitui South Constituency in Kitui County.

Mutomo hospital was established in 1964 subsequent to an invitation by the then Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kitui, to the Sisters of Mercy from Ireland, to establish health care services for the people of Mutomo. Since then the hospital has continued to offer promotive, preventive, and curative services to the people within its catchment area and beyond. The hospital has gradually developed and expanded and today it has a capacity of 124 beds with more than 100 employees.

Since 1997, the hospital enjoys the support from the Swedish/Scandinavian doctor’s bank which ensures that the dental services are continued throughout the year and that the general health care services receive the support of either a general practitioner or a surgeon. The hospital also partners with AMREF for clinical and technical support as well as flying doctors’ services.

The catchment population served by the hospital is close to 200,000. The challenges presenting at Mutomo hospital on a daily basis highlight the tremendous difficulties of the catchment population threatened by poverty, hunger, and disease – each compounding the other.

The hospital in its own right, as the only hospital in Mutomo District, serves as a referral hospital for the district health facilities. It is uniquely positioned to provide this service to a wide area in the region and it is recommended that every effort be made to ensure that the healthcare services are self-sustainable.
