MT. Kenya Academy Senior School Details
Mount Kenya Academy is a mixed boarding school located at Nyeri-Kiganjo Road in Nyeri County. The School was started in 1982 by Mr. & Mrs. Charles Mwangi at the Nyeri Kindergarten site in Nyeri town. The Junior School moved to its present site in 1983. In 2004 following demand from parents and support from Mr. & Mrs Scott Hawkins and family, Cindy Candler and other friends from Atlanta Georgia the Senior School was established.
Ever since the first MKA class sat their KCPE examination in 1988, the Junior School has ranked among the most successful schools in Kenya for KCPE performance and now the Senior School is building the same reputation with both the KCSE and IGCSE. Graduates from both schools have gone on to excellent schools and Universities in Kenya, the UK, the USA, Canada and Australia. Many of them who have completed their studies now have high profile jobs in Kenya and abroad.
For a long time there was a desire to start a Secondary School based on the same strong cultural principles of the Junior School. In the past, when a student graduated from MKA, parents were faced with the difficult task of finding a similar happy learning environment – one which provided high academic standards, individual attention and broad social and co-curricular activities in a secure non-urban atmosphere.
In January 2004, MKA Senior School fulfilled this need voiced by so many parents. It is a school that benefits from the rich heritage and record of success of the neighbouring Junior School. The school is a coeducational establishment offering predominantly boarding places. Students of all faiths find a warm welcome at the school. Currently, it has an enrolment of over 200 students. Staff and Faculty have also increased proportionately.
The Senior School has been equipped and furnished to fully satisfy the range of every student’s intellectual and physical needs. Scholarships are offered based on merit and need. Providing the finest education possible for the future leaders of Africa and beyond, Mount Kenya Academy prides itself on providing students with a strong foundation for a fulfilling and successful life.
Mt. Kenya Academy Senior School Music Program
This is a creative arts program that involves both classroom teaching, instrumental coaching and performance of vocal and instrumental music. The program offers high class training in:

Brass and woodwind instruments(trumpet, cornet, trombone, tuba, saxophone, clarinet, recorder, flute,Guitar Piano
Western drum sets
African instruments(Ohangla drum set, Marimba and chivoti)

Due to increasing number of students taking part in the program, the Music department has gone beyond coaching to performing.

Sports
In line with the school’s objectives, MKASS seeks to provide sports in a way that provides for competitiveness and participation of all students. Teachers and coaches ensure are enthusiastic in their encouragement for the same. We offer a variety of sporting disciplines and have posted some excellent and encouraging results. These include soccer, rugby, basketball, handball, hockey, lawn tennis, badminton, swimming, aerobics and athletics. MKASS participates in both local and international sports fetes and competitions and continues to excel. The school both hosts and visits neighbouring schools.
