Most points scored in an NFL quarter by one team is 41 points by Los Angeles Rams. The Rams achieved this feat against Detroit Lions in 1950.
The historic game was held on 29 October during NFL’s Week 7 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. LA won the game by 65-24, watched live by 27,475 audiences.
Los Angeles Rams establish themselves as the only team in NFL history to score 60 or more points twice in a season and in consecutive games.
The Rams had played the previous week’s game against Baltimore Colts, where they had bagged another win by 70-27. The total of 97 points scored in the whole game remains the 10th most high points of an NFL game.
Hence, the Rams’ 70 points made them the best offensive team in NFL history in terms of average points. They remain among the only three teams to achieve such a high scoring margin in a pro football scenario.
Dallas Cowboys won the game by 54-19 against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 13 of the 2022 NFL season. They scored 33 points in the fourth quarter and created history. However, they are tied with Chicago Cardinals, who also scored 33 points against the Milwaukee Badgers in 1925.
In addition to this, the 42-10 score of the Baltimore Ravens over the Dolphins in September 2019 made history for the most points scored in the first half of an NFL game by one team.
What was the highest scoring NFL game?
The highest-scoring NFL game was between the Washington Commanders, then known as Redskins, and New York Giants on November 27, 1966. The game saw the two teams scoring 113 points, the highest in history.
The Redskins had scored 72 points ahead of the Giants’ 41 points, thus winning the game. That iconic event was held at the now-defunct D.C. Stadium in Washington, D.C.
D.C. Stadium was later known as RFK Stadium, and its demolition plans were announced in September 2019. Events DC has been providing its demolition updates which are still in progress.
Moreover, the game was witnessed by 50,439 spectators, out of whom one got to take a game ball. Brig Owens had thrown a ball into the crowd after he returned a fumble 70 yards for a touchdown.
Meanwhile, the game lost fourteen footballs in total, thirteen due to extra points and one to the crowd.
Washington and the Giants had faced off each other during that season’s Week 12. It was the first out of three games in which the Giants lost the game by losing more than 45 points.
Their first loss was followed by their second loss by 49 points against the Cleveland Browns in Week 13 and by 47 points against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 14.
Likewise, the Redskins and Giants had played against each other before in that season at Week 6 on October 16, 1966. The Giants had won the game by 13-10 at their previous home ground, Yankee Stadium.
Even after 57 years of the iconic game, no teams have surpassed the Redskins and Giants’ record of scoring 113 points in a game.
Coming into 2023 and having witnessed 103 seasons of the NFL, that legendary game was played even before the introduction of nets behind the goalpost which resulted in the 13 lost balls.
