On March 24, 1976, Peyton Manning was born with a cleft palate. A cleft palate is a physical abnormality of the mouth caused by a breach between the two plates of the skull that comprise the hard palate, commonly known as the roof of the mouth.
Manning, like other youngsters with cleft palates, encountered many difficulties. Manning had to use special bottles as a newborn because the hole in his palate caused the milk he was given to flow out his nose.
Manning underwent two procedures as a toddler to fix the gap in his palate and ensure that it remained securely closed as he matured. He also received a bone transplant to cover the space between his top gums.
The gums helped stabilize his upper jaw and allowed his mouth to hold permanent teeth. Dental appointments and braces, which Peyton wore for nearly 10 years to help correct his teeth, were a constant. His problems were not just physical but also mental.
Manning was frequently ridiculed and called names by other kids because of his numerous health concerns and physical looks. Throughout it all, he pursued his passion for playing football, which brought him to the NFL.
Manning has always been candid about his childhood troubles, even after becoming a well-known football star.
