Molly Grantham Breast Cancer
Grantham’s heart is pretty close to “The Cancer Fund” as she disclosed that her mother battled with cancer twice, therefore, she is determined about helping people with such problems overcome too. She also owns a website called ‘CorkPorkGifts.com’, where she sells recycled corks that are made into unique gifts.
Grantham’s great-grandmother had breast cancer first. She did not meet her, she died from it. Her grandmother was diagnosed next. She was in the second grade. Molly recalls seeing her just after a mastectomy, staples on her raw skin. She helped to change her gauze pads.
After a few years, it was her mom. She talked about her breast cancer throughout Grantham’s childhood. “It’s your reality,” she’d say, “best not to ignore it.” Molly grew up thinking she was a poster child for the disease. Those three women are why she got involved with Charlotte’s Susan G. Komen Race for a Cure, they are her inspiration. Grantham and her mom, Wilsie Moss Hartman went through BRCA testing at Presbyterian Hospital to see if Molly had the breast cancer gene.
She was not worried about videotaping the results until seconds before they were revealed, and by then it was too late to turn around. The results were negative. Surprised everyone, including, she thought, the gene counselor assigned to their case.
It means Grantham is no more likely to get breast cancer than any other woman walking down the street. That was a great comfort to her mother. But when “normal” statistics say every three minutes a woman is diagnosed, it’s still not a lot of comfort to her.
Molly said that if cancer could be beaten by hope, it would not stand a chance against people’s start line. Grantham said that she goes to Charlotte’s Race for the Cure to celebrate those who have beaten breast cancer, in honor of those who haven’t and because breast cancer is a threat to every woman. Her mother, grandmother, and great grandmother are why she initially committed herself.
