Moana Jackson, a well-known Mori lawyer, has died after a long illness, according to the Herald.
His death comes after a long history of enthusiastic advocacy for Mori, reforming the criminal justice system, and demolishing racist structures.
Jackson earned a law and criminology degree from Victoria University of Wellington before going on to teach te Reo Mori.
He went on to further his studies in the United States before returning to New Zealand to conduct research for the then-Justice Department report, He Whaipaanga Hou, on the Mori and the criminal justice system.
Jackson devoted much of his education and work to international indigenous issues, such as the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
There is currently no information available about his wife. He appears to be very private about his wife, but he has four children whose names have not been revealed.
