The search for the missing Waterford man ceased after discovering his body.
40-year-old Phillip Quigley had been missing since July 7 from his home in Ferrybank. Worried by the disappearance of her son, his mother reported it to the Garda, Ireland’s law enforcement.
Following her complaint, the authorities sent out a notice about Quigley and described him as 5 feet 10 inches, with short dark hair and blue/green eyes. A rigorous search for the man ensued where the police used the help of multiple news outlets to ask the public for help in identifying the man.
While the Garda were continuing their search, Quigley’s family was also involved in the investigation and tried to look for the man’s whereabouts helplessly. Unfortunately, the month would pass with no news about the man’s location or wellbeing.
Sadly, the Garda discovered Quigley’s body in the Mullinavat area of Co Kilkenny on July 18, 2022. A woman in her 20s found his body in the boot of a car used in a ride-sharing app.
The news of his death shocked Ireland primarily due to the mystery of it. Quigley is survived by his loving mother, Joan, and sister Megan. His Requiem Mass was held on Saturday, July 23.

A woman in her 20s found Philip Quigley’s body in the boot of her rental car.
According to the woman, she had hired the vehicle from a car sharing app, GoCar. A source close to the woman’s family stated that while she was driving the car, she noticed an unidentifiable and foul smell coming from somewhere.
However, the woman guessed that the smell was something like gas that might be coming from the car engine after she started the car. So, she chose to ignore the smell and simply drove on.
It was only after the smell grew more and more noticeable and wouldn’t go away that she stopped the car when she got to Millivant. She then proceeded to check around the vehicle, and that was when she discovered what shocked her and the nation: a dead man’s body was in the boot.
The stunned woman called the Gardai, and they took it from there. The authorities eventually identified the body as Quigley’s.
The woman has stated that she had no knowledge of Quigley before discovering his body and has reached the experience, a harrowing one that she will struggle to forget. The Garda, too, has not connected her to the crime except as an unfortunate discoverer of a corpse.
Concerning the woman and her family, her identity has not been revealed to the public.
Was Philip Quigley’s Death A Murder?
The Garda treat Philip Quigley’s death as a personal tragedy but have not specified if they view it as murder.
The authorities have been unable to identify the cause of death for the man. They have recognized this case as one of the strangest cases that they have ever seen.
How did Quigley get into the boot? Did he get into it himself, or was he shoved into it by someone? Right now, the police are as stumped as the public.
Following his body’s discovery, the police have retracted all of their requests for help from the public and have grown very quiet about the matter. When pressed for information, a source stated that there was simply nothing to state. Quigley’s death is a mystery, and we don’t know how long it will take for the secret to be solved, if ever.

On July 7, Philip Quigley disappeared from his home, and on July 18, his body was discovered in the boot of a car.
These two things are the only known facts in the case of Quigley’s death and disappearance. Everything in between these events is a complete mystery, and no one, not the police, the news, Quigley’s family, or anyone, knows what happened.
Perhaps Garda could solve the case within the month. Perhaps Garda could solve the case sometime in the far future. Perhaps Garda or anyone else will never solve the issue.
All that can be said for sure is that a mother lost a son, a sister lost a brother, and no one knows why.
