In 1999, Minh Le (Vietnamese: Lê Minh, born June 27, 1977), better known by his online moniker Gooseman, collaborated with Jess Cliffe on the famous Half-Life mod Counter-Strike, which went on to become a worldwide phenomenon. He was subsequently hired by Valve Software, the creators of Half-Life, and spent eight years in Korea working on the multiplayer first-person shooter Tactical Intervention, which he helped to create. He is now working as a contractor on the first-person shooter Rust, which is a multiplayer game (video game). Le has worked as a programmer, modeller, and designer on many small-team games throughout the course of his career. Le initially played id Software’s Quake in 1996 and started experimenting with the game’s software development kit. After approximately a year, he finished his first mod (short for “modification”), which was Navy SEALs, which served as the spiritual ancestor of Counter-Strike. 

While working on the Action Quake 2 mod, he came up with the concept for Counter-Strike and made acquainted with Jess Cliffe, the webmaster for the Action Quake 2 mod. In the midst of his fourth year at Simon Fraser University, Le started working on Counter-Strike as a mod for Half-Life, which eventually became Counter-Strike: Source (he later graduated with a degree in computer science). He worked on the mod for approximately 20 hours a week, putting in more effort on it than he did on his studies, and he published the first beta version in June 1999, a year after starting it. As the game’s popularity soared, the “Counter-Strike Team” was able to rapidly create many additional beta versions over the course of the next months. During the fourth beta version, Valve Software (the developer who developed Half-Life) started to help with Counter-development, Strike’s and this continued until the final release. The Counter-Strike franchise was purchased by Valve in 2000, and the company recruited Le and Cliffe to join them at their Bellevue office in Washington, USA, where Le continued to work on Counter-Strike and related titles. During this period, he was working on Counter-Strike 2, but Valve ultimately decided to put the project on hold indefinitely. Having been fired from Valve when Counter-Strike: Source was cancelled, Le decided to pursue a new project on his own. After spending two years working on this idea with a small group of people, he relocated to South Korea in 2008 to collaborate with a company called FIX Korea, which offered money for continued development. Following the first announcement of Tactical Intervention, it was revealed to be a game in the manner of Counter-Strike, developed on a customised version of Valve’s Source game engine. The most significant reason Half-Life was still popular five years after its debut, according to an editorial in GameSpy in 2003, was Minh Le’s involvement. IGN rated Jess Cliffe and Minh Le as the 14th most influential game creators of all time on their “Top 100 Game Creators of All Time” list. The word “Goose” is spray-painted on the wall of bombsite A in de dust2, a highly famous level in the Counter-Strike video game series. Shane Gooseman, one of the major characters in the 1980s cartoon series The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers, is the inspiration for the moniker Shane Gooseman.
