Mike Thomas Saint

Michael Thomas’ contract with Saints is $100 million, deal with it

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio suggests that the Saints contract with Michael Thomas is five years and $96.25 million rather than the $100 million initially reported.

It’s being a little picky quibbling about $3.75 million when you’re dealing with the kind of money being paid to New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio who kind of quibbles with things for a living said in a report recently that the $100 million deal Thomas signed is actually $96.25 million.

Well, I mean, tomato, tomato. Oh and I’m pronouncing tomato the correct way the first time and the incorrect kinda English way the second time. Or maybe it’s the other way around. But the correct way is what I mean. The vast majority of sports contracts have incentives written in. Many have hard to nearly impossible incentives written in. The contract between the Saints and Michael Thomas is no different.

Sure, it makes a little different being that we’re talking about Thomas being the first to receive a $100 million deal. And you’re hearing this from a guy who still isn’t sure why the eight-year, $132 million deal that Calvin Johnson signed with the Lions in 2012 and the eight-year, $120 million signed by Larry Fitzgerald don’t count.

Florio breaks down the contract in full detail and there are some incentives that you’re not likely to see Thomas hit. In 2022 and 2023 for example, Thomas has to hit 100 receptions for 1,400 yards and 12 TDs along with a playoff berth for escalators to kick in.

Guessing Drew Brees would be gone by that point and whoever the quarterback is would be playing a different game. We’re not just assuming that will be Teddy Bridgewater. The 100 catches and 1,400 yards are still reachable numbers.

The 12 touchdowns stipulation is different. Only three receivers hit the mark in 2018. Those were Antonio Brown with 15, Davante Adams with 13 and Tyreek Hill with 12. All receivers it’s worth noting who is considered more deep threats than is Michael Thomas.

The fact is that Thomas could still hit the $100 million mark. To say it’s not accurate because of incentives is disingenuous. I mean, are we going to start giving a contract figure minus taxes or something? He’s the highest-paid on a yearly basis in the history of the universe for a wide receiver until the next guy.

As stated though, this is quibbling. We could parse everything out. We could put an asterisk next to any mention of a contract and then footnote all of the incentives that could potentially make it less than the stated amount.

But contracts are never fully guaranteed in the NFL anyway. Michael Thomas’ guaranteed money is around $61 million for example. So any contract figure is only ultimately paid out if the player completes the contract.

A player who may retire early like Calvin Johnson needs to have an asterisk next to their name. And since injuries are always a possibility and thus early retirement potentially, we can agree that no stated contract figure is really what it says it is. It’s an approximation.

If we really feel the need to quibble as some people obviously do, we can just start doing all contract mentions with a follow-up, a 20-line itemized list like Florio has done for Michael Thomas.

The only thing standing in the way of making this a reality is that it really doesn’t matter, does it? Nope. It does not. This is a writing deadline that was in search of a topic.

Hypothetical, someone said to you they’d give you either $100 million over five years or $96.25 million over five years. To get the full amount, you’d have to listen to Mike Florio explain to you why it mattered. You’d be $96.25 million richer.

It’s not inaccurate reporting. It’s just, hey, Mike Florio, here’s some haterade, your throat is sounding a little dry. We’ll just assume that a contract’s value is different than the total amount being printed. Michael Thomas is going to be really rich.

We’ll just leave you with the words of the poet, Antoine Patton, who famously wrote about haters, “The whole world loves it when you’re in the news and the whole world loves it when you sang the blues.” But the whole world isn’t all haters. Some just have access to bigger microphones.

Mike Thomas Rams WR

Rams WR Mike Thomas making a strong impression at camp

Wide receiver Mike Thomas has been making a strong impression early on in training camp. And no, we’re not talking about the Saints All-Pro. We’re referring to the other fourth-year wideout who plays for the Rams.

“He really has,” said Sean McVay on the re-emergence of Thomas. “You see, he’s made some plays over the last couple days. He’s got great explosiveness, he’s catching the ball really well. He’s obviously been a great contributor for ‘Bones’ (special teams coordinator John Fassel), had his opportunities when he’s been healthy.

He’s got the great speed down the field, he’s a physical football player and he’s really been a guy – I’m sure you ask because you’ve seen it – he’s done a really nice job and we’ve been really pleased with Mike over the last couple days.”

McVay is right; there’s no way we’d be writing an article about Thomas if we didn’t see it. He’s struggled to see the field much at all during his time with the Rams due to injuries, suspensions, and simply being buried in the depth chart behind better players. Given this, it’s clear that the Rams must think highly of him to have kept him around for this long. He’s one of just 15 Rams left from the pre-McVay era.

Thomas has notably developed a strong connection with backup quarterback Blake Bortles over the last week of camp. The duo has been lighting it up together with the second-unit. Thomas even got some first-team reps during the team’s first co-practice with the Chargers, filling in for Brandin Cooks after he experienced some hamstring tightness.

It’s an uphill battle for Thomas to make much of an impact on the depth chart. He’s firmly behind Cooks, Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, and even Josh Reynolds in the receiver hierarchy.

Still, the fact that the team has gone out of their way to praise him means he’s a good bet to be on the opening day roster. Expect to see plenty of Thomas when the Rams begin preseason play this Saturday in Oakland.

Mike Thomas ESPN

ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez left WR Mike Thomas off his 53-man roster projection for the Rams.

Gonzalez said he originally had Thomas making the team but after being hit with a four-game PED suspension, Gonzalez now sees him on the outside looking in.

Thomas played sparingly last year (102 offensive snaps) and now faces competition from rookie wideouts Cooper Kupp and Josh Reynolds. Gonzalez expects seven receivers to crack the Rams’ roster including Kupp, Reynolds, Tavon Austin, Robert Woods, Pharoh Cooper, Bradley Marquez, and Nelson Spruce.

NFL suspended Rams WR Mike Thomas four games for violating the league’s policy on PEDs.

Not to be confused with New Orleans wideout and consensus second-round fantasy pick Michael Thomas. The 22-year-old Rams receiver reeled in just 3-of-9 targets for 37 yards over 102 offensive snaps in 2016.

Thomas will be eligible to return against Seattle in Week 5. The suspension may hurt Thomas’ chances of making the Rams’ 53-man roster after Los Angeles drafted Cooper Kupp and Josh Reynolds in the third and fourth rounds

According to ESPN Rams reporter Steve Dilbeck, sixth-round WR Mike Thomas “has more drops than any player in camp.”

Thomas has strictly been working with the second- and third-team offenses at training camp. There’s been some buzz that he’s developed a chemistry with fellow rookie Jared Goff in practices, but it doesn’t sound like Thomas is making a strong impression. He’s no higher than fifth on the depth chart. Adapted from ESPN
