Mbuvi Gideon Kioko, or Mike Sonko as he is commonly known, is the immediate former MP for the Makadara Constituency of Nairobi, Kenya. His first post in Parliament was a by-election, in which he brought established political figures such as Ruben Ndolo to the plenary. He became the first Nairobi County Senator after defeating his rivals for the seat. Sonko also became the second governor of Nairobi County after winning Kenya’s 2017 election. Indeed, his victory deserved all the attention it received as the billionaire defeated then-reigning Evans Kidero to secure the seat.

Mike Sonko was born on February 27, 1975. He grew up with his family in Mombasa, where he was born. He had his elementary education at Kikowani Elementary School in Mombasa and then attended Kwale High School in Kwale County.
He did everything, tried both worlds and still came out successful. Sonko spent his early years in the crime scene, ranging from heists on the streets of Mombasa to becoming an international drug lord. He is a notorious jailbreaker who escaped from Shimo La Tewa Prison under unclear circumstances.

Before Mike Sonko came to Parliament, he was used to operating a fleet of matatus (public vehicles) in Eastlands. How he obtained the capital to start this company is unclear. He also engaged in various shady deals. Whether he is now straight and narrow is not clear.
