Mike McGlinchey is an American football offensive tackle taken from Notre Dame by the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL) with the ninth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Here’s what you need to know about picking the first round.
Mike McGlinchey Bio
49ers great Mike was born Michael SeanMcGlinchey on January 12, 1994, in Warrington, Pennsylvania, a short drive from Philadelphia. He attended William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With his interest in sports and just the right stature, he joined the football and basketball teams. Mike started as a tight end, had a brief stint at quarterback before moving to offensive lineman, a position he likes to play. Mike was named team captain in his senior year and was selected as a first-team offensive lineman by a few outlets.
Coming from an extraordinary career, he continued his explosive game at the University of Notre Dame, known for its tradition of success. McGlinchey, as noted, is a proven hybrid and has a history of playing football in a scared fashion, exploring different positions from quarterback to almost every other offensive and defensive position except for cornerback and safety. He made redshirts in his freshman year, but played all 13 games (1 start) in his second season. Given his versatility, after redshirting his freshman year in 2013, he became a regular starter at right tackle heading into the 2015 season, including starting the Music City Bowl team victory over LSU at right tackle. He eventually switched to left tackle ahead of the 2016 season.
He returned to Notre Dame for his 5th year of eligibility to improve his stock for the project. In his final college season, he saw action primarily on special teams and also helped the Fighting Irish finish seventh nationally in rushing yards (269.3 yards per game average) over the course of the 2017 season. In addition to that, McGlinchey was named team captain and also earned first-team All-America honors. He graduated with a degree in film, television and theater in May 2017.
Mike McGlinchey was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the ninth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Following his selection, the 49ers signed him to a four-year contract with a guaranteed total value of $18.34 millions of dollars. The offensive lineman is ready to follow the fire and be a starter throughout his NFL career after proving his athleticism with the Fighting Irish. He will begin his career facing veteran tackle Joe Staley and could become his eventual successor at left tackle. Staley has been a stalwart along the offensive line for more than a decade.
His family
Big Mike comes from an incredibly big football family. Most of his family members played or play college football with some making a profession out of the game. Among them are his first cousin, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan and an uncle, John Loughery, who played quarterback at Boston College from 1979 to 1982. He is the eldest of six children (five boys, one girl) born to Mike McGlinchey Sr. and Janet McGlinchey including a brother, Jimmy McGlinchey who has autism.
Height, weight and body measurements
Athletes are known for their massive physique and impressively built body but McGlinchey’s gigantic height is one that beats the imagination due to the fact that his people are not that big. His dad is about 5’11” while his mother is 5’8″, with the tallest of his parents being about 6’4″. That said, only a genetic mutation could explain his giant stature.
Mike McGlinchey is 6 feet 8 inches (2.01 m) tall which carries his 315 pounds (132 kg). He has an ideal build and with the combination of his height and weight, he has the power and athleticism to line up on either side of the offensive line and take on top talent. Additionally, his tenacity, quick feet, excellent pass-blocking abilities and athletic IQ make him an excellent pro in the making. Still, like almost every player entering the league, McGlinchey needs to add strength and bend better in the running game to step up his game.
His other body stats include his hand size which measures 10 inches (0.25 m) and his arm length measures 34 inches (0.86 m).
