Mike Bibby hired as a high school basketball coach after sexual misconduct claims.
Mike Bibby, who was ousted as Phoenix Shadow Mountain’s head basketball coach in late February following sexual misconduct allegations, was announced by Phoenix Hillcrest Prep as its high school head coach on Monday. Bibby led Shadow Mountain to four consecutive 4A state basketball championships. He starred at Shadow Mountain in the 1990s and helped lead the Arizona Wildcats to the NCAA championship as a freshman in 1997.
“We are excited to welcome Mike Bibby as part of the Hillcrest Prep family,” said Nick Weaver, co-founder of Hillcrest and recruiting coordinator. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the program.”Bibby, who did not immediately return a message from The Republic, did not return to Shadow Mountain after an investigation was conducted over allegations of sexual abuse and harassment two years ago by a Shadow Mountain teacher. Phoenix police did not recommend criminal charges against Bibby because it did not find probable cause.
“Mike Bibby was cleared of the charges so nothing held us back from hiring him,” Weaver said in a text. “Mike truly has a passion for kids and helping them succeed so for us it was an easy decision.”I’m very excited about the opportunity,” Bibby said in a text. “Got some good young talented kids I get to work with.”
Suns center Deandre Ayton played his last two years in high school for Hillcrest, before playing one season at UA. He was the No. 1 pick of the NBA draft in 2018. Bibby, who played 14 years in the NBA, played this summer in the BIG 3 for the Ghost Ballers. Bibby told The Republic in April that he was hoping to land a college or NBA coaching job. Bibby said then that he was hoping his coaching future wasn’t damaged by the police investigation.“There’s nothing there that should keep me out of it,” he said then.

Mike Bibby Sexual Assault
He is being investigated by the police over accusations of sexual harassment. He is accused of assaulting a teacher, who works in the same school, where he is now the school basketball coach. The occurrence is reported to have taken place back in 2017.
The Republic, citing a restraining order granted last week, said that Mr. Bibby had been accused of grabbing the teacher by the waist and pulling her into a car, then groping her and rubbing his genitals on her. After the woman left the car, the order said, he followed her and made sexual remarks. The woman said she did not know Mr. Bibby before the incident. The restraining order quoted the teacher as saying she was “in shock, in fear, intimidated by his actions, afraid of him as he smelled of alcohol.”
Authorities in Phoenix say that former NBA guard Mike Bibby will likely not face criminal charges after being accused of sexual abuse. Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Vince Lewis told the Arizona Republic that the police department won’t recommend criminal charges against Bibby and confirmed that his case is closed. After the allegations, Bibby was removed from his position as the head coach at Shadow Mountain High School where he had been the head coach for the past six years, leading his team to five state titles.
A Shadow Mountain teacher obtained a restraining order against Bibby in February, after claiming Bibby, “grabbed her by the waist and pulled her into his car on school grounds, rubbing his genitals against her and groping her.”Bibby played for five teams in 14 NBA seasons from 1998-2012, most notably with the Sacramento Kings. He also won a national championship with Arizona in 1997.

Sex abuse allegation
Though the claim against Bibby emerged in mid-February, it wasn’t until late in the month that he was ousted as a coach, his badge and access to the school deactivated.
Here’s a timeline, according to the restraining order, district statements, and email records:
- Feb. 8: The teacher told a colleague about sexual abuse by Bibby in February 2017, according to the restraining order.
- Feb. 11: The colleague reported the incident to Shadow Mountain’s school resource officer. An email shows David Appleman, Shadow Mountain’s principal, was also aware of the abuse claim on Feb. 11, through a third party whose name is redacted. Appleman wrote to Michelle Otstot, an official with the district’s human-resources department, about the claims.
- Feb. 13: The school-resource officer met with the teacher at her home to discuss what the colleague reported, according to the restraining order.
- Feb. 14: An official from the Phoenix Police Department informed the district of an investigation into the Bibby allegation, according to a statement from the district. This prompted the district to suspend its own internal investigation, district spokeswoman Becky Kelbaugh wrote.
- Feb. 23: Shadow Mountain’s varsity boys basketball team won the state championship game, with Bibby as a coach.
- Feb. 25: The Republic obtained a copy of the restraining order. In the afternoon, a reporter asked the district about the allegations. After the district responded to the reporter with a statement, human-resources officials internally shared over email what was labeled as “Mike Bibby 2-25-19 Letter of Ineligibility as a Volunteer” on Google Docs. At 7 p.m., another HR official asked in an email that Bibby’s district badge be deactivated. The district added in a statement that officials received the injunction on Feb. 25, the first time, Kelbaugh wrote, that they obtained firsthand information.
- Feb. 26: As the allegations began making national headlines, Otstot asked school officials in an email whether Bibby had any keys to Shadow Mountain facilities. Appleman replied, “I can confirm that Mike Bibby was not issued, nor is in possession of, keys to the SMHS facilities.”
- April 11: Phoenix police spokesman Sgt. Vince Lewis confirms that the department will decline to recommend criminal charges against Bibby and the case has been closed.
