Chad Cornes Hails From A Football Family
Chad is the son of Graham Cornes, a former Australian rules footballer and coach, and the brother of Kane Cornes, another former Australian rules footballer.
Graham Cornes
Between 1967 and 1982, his father, Graham, was a SANFL champion with Glenelg Football Club. In the SANFL, Graham mostly played Ruck Rover and center half-forward.
The footballer scored 339 goals in 317 club games for Glenelg and was named best and fairest three times. In 1978, he captained Glenelg, and in 1973, he was a part of the premiership squad, taking a magnificent mark in the last minutes of the game and calmly scoring the goal to restore the lead.
He made a notable stunning mark against Norwood in 1977, which is depicted in Jamie Cooper’s artwork The Game That Made Australia, commissioned by the AFL in 2008 to commemorate the sport’s 150th anniversary.
He began his career with the VFL’s South Melbourne in Victoria but remained in South Australia. Graham made his VFL debut in 1979 at the age of 31 and played five games for Ron Barassi’s North Melbourne before being released and returning to South Australia.
Most South Australians believed the footballer was playing out of place in the VFL after making his reputation as a Ruck Rover in South Australia.
He was named the Adelaide Football Club’s initial senior coach in their maiden season in the AFL in 1991.
The Crows finished ninth at the conclusion of the 1991 season and ninth again at the end of the 1992 season in their maiden year under Graham. He led the Crows to their first finals appearance, finishing third at the end of the 1993 season.
Kane Cornes
Kane was a member of Port Adelaide’s successful pre-season squads in 2001 and 2002.
The squad then advanced to the AFL, and he was a member of the side that won the 2004 AFL premiership, Port Adelaide’s first in the AFL. Cornes cemented his spot in the midfield in 2004, his fourth season in the tournament, averaging 20 disposals per game.
He continued his outstanding form into 2005, becoming an All-Australian, and in 2006, despite his team Port Adelaide having a dismal year, he completed his 100th game for the club in round 7 and topped the AFL Dreamteam competition.
He gained All-Australian selection for the second time in 2007 in a squad dominated by Geelong players. Kane was also the AFL’s leading possession winner, collected the most Brownlow votes for the year for Port Adelaide, and won the John Cahill Medal ahead of brother Chad.
He won his third John Cahill Medal in 2010 and cemented his status as the club’s most consistent player with a new attacking role that expanded on his prior role of just tagging the opposition’s best players.
Kane’s 36-possession, 2-goal performance against the Western Bulldogs in Round 16 of that year, was a highlight, as was a 38-possession performance against West Coast late in the year.
The footballer appeared in the first two games of the season before resting in round three.
Kane then played three more games to bring his career total to 298 before declaring that his 300th and last game with the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service would be against Richmond in round 8. Kane played 300 games with Port Adelaide, two All Australian guernseys, earning four best and fairest awards and a premiership.
