When he was a professional ice hockey goalie, Miikka Sakari Kiprusoff (Finnish pronunciation: [miikka skri kiprusof]; born October 26, 1976) was a Finnish goaltender who played for the Calgary Flames and the San Jose Sharks during his National Hockey League (NHL) career. In the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, the Sharks chose him in the fifth round, 116th overall, as the 116th overall pick. He has also played for TPS of the Finnish SM-liiga, as well as AIK and Timr IK of the Swedish Elitserien, among other teams.
During his career, he represented Finland on the international stage on many occasions, winning silver medals at the World Ice Hockey Championships in 1999 and 2001, as well as guiding the Finns to a surprising second-place finish at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. He also had a role in the Finnish national hockey team’s bronze-medal performance at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Having begun his professional career with TPS in 1994, Kiprusoff was awarded the league’s top goalkeeper as well as the best player of the playoffs in 1999, when he helped the team win the SM-liga title.
Moving to North America in 1999, he made his NHL debut with the San Jose Sharks in 2000 following two all-star seasons in the American Hockey League. He was mostly used as a backup throughout his time with the Sharks. After being acquired by the Calgary Flames in 2003–04, Kiprusoff was promoted to the starting lineup, where he established a modern-day NHL record for lowest goals against average (1.69) while guiding the Flames to the 2004 Stanley Cup Final.
In 2006, he was awarded the Vezina Trophy as the top goalie in the NHL, as well as the William M. Jennings Trophy as the goaltender who allowed the fewest goals in the league. In 2007, he was selected to his first NHL All-Star Game, and he now holds the wins and shutout records for the Calgary Flames.
