British-born Irish artist, author, broadcaster, and journalist Michael Viney (6 February 1933 – 30 May 2023) died at age 83. Since 1962, he has contributed to The Irish Times, where he is most known for his work on nature.
For The Irish Times, Viney wrote in the 1960s about social issues like the treatment of inmates. Later, his writings on child abuse in institutions in Ireland were included in the Ryan Report.
Beginning as a broadcaster for social, consumer affairs, and home and family-related programs on RTÉ Television, Viney has a background in these areas. He received instruction there for directing TV, and in 1976 he was promoted to production editor. Over time, the column’s emphasis switched from environmental sustainability to natural history. In February 2023, his final column was released.
