Michael Skakel Is Still Alive: Where Is He Today?

More than a quarter of a century had passed since Martha Moxley’s bludgeoned body was found under a tree on the Moxley property when Kennedy’s cousin Michael Skakel was found guilty of her murder in 2002.

In 1975, on the eve of Halloween, Martha’s mother, Dorthy, called the police and started calling Martha’s friends when she didn’t come home after a night out in the neighborhood.

The following day, Moxley’s body was discovered in her family’s backyard, behind a tree. She had her undergarments and pants pulled down, but she had not been sexually molested.

Near the body, they discovered shards of a broken six-iron golf club. Per an autopsy, she had been clubbed and stabbed with the club, which was found in the Skakel home.

Michael Skakel Whereabouts: Is He Still Alive?

Michael Skakel, 61, is still alive and was released after paying a $1.2 million bond and has stayed free ever since.

On the other hand, a Twitter user said: “Speaking of getting away with – I just watched (for the 3rd time) the #Oxygen channel 3-part series on the #MarthaMoxley murder. The killer(s) is walking free after nearly 50 years. Scary.”

In the murder of 15-year-old Martha Moxley, who was discovered bludgeoned to death in Connecticut 45 years ago, Kennedy’s cousin Michael Skakel was not subjected to a second trial, according to NBC News.

As per NBC Connecticut, Chief State’s Attorney Richard Colangelo Jr. testified before a judge in October 2020 that Skakel’s innocence cannot be shown beyond a reasonable doubt since there is insufficient forensic and eyewitness evidence.

Based on the affiliate, 17 of the 50 witnesses who testified in the case—including the crucial witness who claimed Skakel confessed to the 1975 killing—have already passed away.

Update On Michael Skakel 2022 Net Worth

Given that he spent the family’s riches fighting his conviction, Michael’s estimated net worth in 2022 may be less than $1 million.

As reported by the New York Times, “very few criminal defendants can hope to marshal; the cost of challenging the conviction has “gone well into the millions of thousands” and “depleted the family money.”

The wealth belonged to industrial tycoon George Skakel, Michael Skakel’s paternal grandfather, who perished in an aircraft crash in 1957 with his wife, Ann.

When the grandparents’ trusts were winding down in 2007, Michael “received the same $383,000 that his siblings got in final payouts from the grandparents’ trusts.”

What Happened To Brother Tommy Skakel?

Despite becoming a suspect since he was the last person to have seen Martha alive, Tommy Skakel had an alibi, and the Greenwich Police Department lacked sufficient evidence to make an arrest.

As a result, the tale made headlines worldwide when Michael Skakel, Tommy’s brother, was detained for Martha’s murder in 2000 after rumors that he had confessed to the crime.

At the outset of his trial in June 2002, Michael Skakel was 41 years old. The main argument for the state was that Michael had killed Martha in a drunken frenzy because he was inflamed by envy over her connection with Tommy.

His Prison Sentence Amid Martha Moxley Murder

In 2002, Skakel—the niece of Robert F. Kennedy’s widow—was found guilty of killing Moxley and given a 20- to a life sentence. Due to errors made by his trial attorney, he was given a new trial in 2013 after spending 11 years and having many appeals rejected.

When the Connecticut state’s attorney declared they would not retry Michael Skakel in October 2020, citing the state’s inability to establish its case beyond a reasonable doubt, Michael Skakel received good news.

As a result, 46 years after Martha Moxley was killed, the case has once again been left unsolved, and her childhood friends have little faith that her killer will one day be apprehended—that is unless someone out there decides to come forward and share a secret they may have been holding for all these years.
