Morpurgo, Michael (born 5 October 1943) is an English novelist, poet, dramatist, and librettist who is best known for his children’s books. He has received many awards and honours for his work. From 2003 to 2005, Morpurgo was the third British Children’s Laureate, after Roald Dahl. Born in 1943, he went to school in London, Sussex, and Canterbury, among other places. He continued his education at King’s College London, University of London, where he studied English and French, earning a third-class degree. Later, he entered the teaching profession, beginning with a position at a primary school in Kent, where he found his true calling in life. Morpurgo’s biological father is actor Tony Van Bridge, who also happens to be his paternal grandfather. While Bridge was abroad fighting in World War II, his mother, Kippe Cammaerts, who had previously worked as an actress, met Jack Morpurgo. After seeing the 1962 film adaptation of Great Expectations with his mother, Morpurgo discovered who his real father was when he was 19 years old.
Bridge played the role of Morpurgo’s father. Morpurgo has one elder brother, Peter, who is also a writer. Michael Morpurgo was schooled in schools in central London, Devon, Sussex, and Kent; his unpleasant experiences at boarding school would serve as inspiration for his book The Butterfly Lion, which is set in the same universe. He went to Mount House, an independent prep school in Devon, until he was thirteen years old. After that, he attended The King’s School, a private school in Canterbury, before matriculating at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England.
