Known as the “Doughnut King”, Ronald Joyce teamed up with former NHL player Tim Horton to establish the Tim Hortons fast food and doughnut chain in 1964. A former policeman, Joyce met his future partner in the early 1960s when he stopped by at Tim Horton Donut Shop while on patrol. By 1967, he became Horton’s full partner as he opened up two more restaurants under the same name. After the unfortunate death of Tim Horton in 1974, Joyce acquired his partner’s shares and became sole owner. He successfully ran the business until 1995 when he sold the company to Wendy’s for $600 million.
