Emerson was born on 7th September 1954 in Cedar Rapids in Lowa USA. He was born to his parents, carol and Ronald H. Emerson. He was brought up in Toledo, where he attended his High School is a member of the school marching band.
He later attended Drake University, graduating in 1976 with a degree in Theatre and Art. He also studied at National Theatre Institute, after which he started looking for acting jobs.
