Michael Cooper is an American basketball coach and former player who is the boy’s varsity coach at Chadwick School. He played for two seasons, 1976–78, for the New Mexico Lobos and was named the first All-Western Athletic Conference team.
The Lobos captured the WAC championship in his senior season, with Cooper posting 16.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists per play. Cooper ‘s previous coaching roles include leading the Women’s National Basketball Association’s Los Angeles Sparks to two championships, and the Albuquerque Thunderbirds to one NBA G League win.
A former player in the National Basketball Association ( NBA), Cooper won five NBA titles during their Showtime era with the Los Angeles Lakers. He played in the NBA, WNBA, and the NBA Development League as well. Selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the third round of the 1978 NBA draft with the 60th overall pick, Cooper with his defensive skills became an important part of their 1980s showtime teams. He has been selected to eight NBA All-Defensive Teams in a twelve-year career including five First Teams.

Michael Cooper Cancer
Cooper was diagnosed with early-stage tongue cancer in July 2014. He had surgery at Emory University’s Winship Cancer Institute in Atlanta and expected a full recovery. After an 11–22 season in 2017, Atlanta did not extend his contract.

In November 1999 he was named head coach of the Sparks, and the record of the Sparks steadily improved as they finished 28-4 in their 2000 campaign. For his efforts, Cooper has been named the WNBA Coach of the Year. The Sparks followed in 2001 and 2002 with consecutive WNBA Championships but were denied a third straight WNBA championship by losing in 2003 to the Detroit Shock.
Cooper took a job as an assistant coach under Jeff Bzdelik with the Denver Nuggets after the Sacramento Monarchs ended the Sparks’ run in the first round of the 2004 WNBA Playoffs. Bzedlik was fired after 24 games, and Cooper was named an interim head coach for the Nuggets.
He remained interim head coach until George Karl was brought in about a month later to coach the team and worked the remainder of the season as a scout for the Nuggets. Cooper was the Albuquerque Thunderbirds’ head coach for two years (2006–07). After coaching them at the 2006 National Basketball Association D- League Championship he left the Thunderbirds in 2007.
Cooper later returned to WNBA coaching as head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks. Cooper was named head coach of the Women of Troy Basketball Team at the University of Southern California in May 2009. After USC went 11–20 in 2013 he left and finished seventh with a 7–11 record in the Pac-12 Conference. At USC he was 72–57 overall. In November 2013, the Atlanta Dream hired Cooper as head coach. In 2018, Cooper signed on to coach Big3 League Company 3. Cooper was named the boys’ varsity coach at Chadwick School in the Los Angeles County’s Palos Verdes Peninsula in 2019.
