Michael Bloomberg is without a doubt one of the richest and businessmen in America. He is a businessman, author, politician, engineer, and philanthropist with an estimated net worth of $51.7 billion. His financial status thus makes him the 8th richest person in America and the 11th richest person in the world. In addition to his vast fortune, he fueled a political ambition as mayor of New York from 2001 to 2013. More about his life journey below.
Michael Bloomberg’s biography
Michael Rubens Bloomberg was born at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton, Boston on February 14, 1942. He was born into a Jewish family. His mother’s name was Charlotte Rubens (January 2, 1909 – June 19, 2011) and she was born in New Jersey and his father William Henry Bloomberg (1906–1963) was an accountant at a dairy. Until Michael was two years old, he and his family lived in Allston, Massachusetts. After that they moved to Brookline, Massachusetts. Two years later, his family finally settled in Medford, Boston, where Michael lived until he became a college grad.
He had his college education at Johns Hopkins University and at school he was a great asset to them, designing the school’s mascot “Blue Jay” in 1962 when he was a sophomore. By 1964, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. Interestingly, he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi. Because of his love of education and his determination to gain the knowledge that would help him achieve his goals, he decided to pursue his master’s degree, which he did when he graduated from Harvard Business School in 1966.
surgeon in business
He partnered with a bulge-bracket Wall Street investment bank called Salomon Brothers in 1973, where he led systems development before moving up to stock trading. Phibro Corporation acquired Salomon Brothers in 1981, after which Michael was fired with no severance pay. He didn’t need to worry too much, however, as he owned $10 million in equity as a partner in the company.
After leaving Salomon Brothers he decided to start his own business and that is how Innovative Market Systems was born. This deal was based on his realization that Wall Street is willing to pay big bucks as long as they can get quality business information in a variety of usable forms.
The new company soon welcomed its first customer, Merrill Lynch, in 1982. The customer invested $30 million and installed 22 of the company’s Market Master terminals. The company then changed its name to Bloomberg LP in 1987. By 2015, the company managed over 325,000 terminal subscribers worldwide.
Political career
He later relinquished his position as CEO of his company and handed it over to Lex Fenwick so he could focus on a political goal as mayor of New York City. In 2001, he was elected the 108th Mayor of New York, during which time he served three important terms in office. He devoted 8 months of his last tenure to philanthropic work. After his tenure ended, he announced that he wanted to return as CEO of his company – Bloomberg LP – in late 2014, which he did.
He was rumored to be interested in fighting for the top spot in the US, but Michael continued to deny the claims. As speculation continued to mount as to whether or not he would run for president in the 2016 presidential election, he endorsed another candidate (Hillary Clinton). Michael also has an autobiography written with the help of his company’s editor-in-chief, Matthew Winkler. The autobiography is called Bloomberg by Bloomberg.
Family – wife, daughter
Michael married his heartthrob, a British Yorkshire woman, Susan Elizabeth Barbara Brown, in 1979. Together they had two beautiful girls, Georgina (born 1983) and Emma (born 1979). Because they were born into wealth, they were featured in a documentary that examined the lives of children born into extreme wealth. Divorce knocked on the couple in 1993, but Michael claims they (he and his ex-wife) still remain best friends regardless of the divorce.
By 2010, Michael found solace in the arms of Diana Taylor, a former New York State bank supervisor with whom he lived. To maintain the family’s wealth, his daughter Emma married another billionaire’s son, Christopher Frissora.
religion
In terms of his religion, Michael Bloomberg was born into a Jewish home. Although he attended a Hebrew school, maintains a kosher kitchen, and has a bar mitzvah, he appears to have become more worldly at the moment, as he did not raise his daughters to have a Jewish identity. Michael Bloomberg also only attends the synagogue on major holidays.
Height
It can be quite a disappointment when a business mogulist isn’t also a wealthy man for his size. But don’t worry, Michael Bloomberg has the height to back his influence. The billionaire is 1.73 m tall, which is not bad at all for a man of his class.
