Mia Freedman Parents Are From Australia

Mia Freedman was born to her parents Laurence and Kathy Freedman in Sydney.

Mia is the only daughter of her family and was raised Jewish. While residing in Sydney, she attended Ascham School in New South Wales, Australia.

Her father’s side of the family is a South African immigrant who came to Australia after the Nazis’ intervention.

Her mother, Kathy, is a psychologist and owner of an art gallery. Her father Laurence is currently the chairman and the financial manager of the Freedman Foundation. Smh reported that he was a pioneer in this nation’s investment management sector.

He helped co-found EquitiLink Limited, a business with $3 billion in assets under management, in 1980.

Talking with the news reporter, she mentioned how proud she is of her dad, who came to Australia with nothing and built an empire for the family. Laurence came to Australia at 22 with his South African-born parents and nothing more.

Shortly after his arrival, he joined as an assistant to the junior analyst at the mining company Gold Fields Group. He then worked as an investment manager for BT Australia for two years before leaving to start his own business in 1980.

Mia mentioned that she and her stepbrother, Michael Kotowicz (Kathy’s son from a previous marriage), grew up in a middle-class family, as his father’s business did not succeed until she was in high school.

With Sherman, a friend and former Westpac rival, he founded Equitilink, which grew to become the nation’s largest independent fund manager, managing $6 billion at its peak. However, he sold the company in 2000 after the 1987 market crash.

He has since served as chair and director of many international companies in investment management, media, resources, health, and the environment.

The assassination of his bypass heart surgery surgeon, Victor Chang, in July 1991 caused him to rethink his life “totally, enormously.” The tragedy inspired him to establish the Freedman Foundation, which funds medical research and youth programs.
