Son of Turkish immigrants, Ozil was born on October 15, 1988, in Gelsenkirchen, North Rhine-Westphalia.
His grandpa relocated to Germany as a guest worker from Zonguldak, Turkey.
Before spending five years with Rot-Weiss Essen, he played for a number of clubs in Gelsenkirchen between 1995 and 2000 while still in childhood. Ozil transferred and joined Schalke 04’s youth system in 2005.
After starting as a playmaker and central offensive midfielder in DFL-Ligapokal games against Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich in lieu of the suspended Lincoln, he was used as a midfielder and wore the number 17 as his squad number.
He was dubbed “the next big thing” after being selected for Schalke’s first team.
