The world bid a somber farewell to an icon on July 20, 2023, as Mr. Merrill Joseph Fernando, the visionary founder and CEO of Dilmah, the renowned Sri Lankan tea business, passed away. His remarkable journey and dedication to promoting Pure Ceylon Tea will forever be remembered, as will his significant contributions to the country, his family, and the tea industry at large.

Family and Early Life: Merrill J. Fernando’s journey began in May 1930 when he was born into a humble family in Pallansena, Negombo, British Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). His upbringing instilled in him the values of hard work, integrity, and a strong sense of community. Little did the world know that this young boy would grow up to become a legend in the tea industry.

Education and Career: In pursuit of his dreams, Merrill ventured to Colombo for his early education and spent his entire professional career in the city. Initially aspiring to become a lawyer, his life took an unexpected turn when he stumbled upon a rare job opportunity as a tea tester. The tea trade was under British control at the time, and the position was usually reserved for foreigners. However, Merrill’s passion and determination won him a spot among the initial six students selected for tea taster training.

At the age of 58, Merrill made a bold decision that would change the trajectory of the tea industry in Sri Lanka. Disturbed by the exploitation of local tea farmers and producers, he embarked on a mission to revive the Sri Lankan tea business. In 1974, he purchased his first tea estates and established Ceylon Tea Services Limited (CTS) in 1981.

Organization and Legacy: CTS and its various subsidiaries eventually came under the umbrella of MJF Holdings, Limited. Under Merrill’s leadership, the Dilmah brand was born, named after his two beloved sons, Dilhan and Malik. His unwavering commitment to providing pure Sri Lankan tea, untouched by blending with cheaper teas, laid the foundation for Dilmah’s success and its reputation as a leader in the market.

Merrill’s vision extended beyond business profits. He believed in giving back to society and established the MJF Charitable Foundation to support various humanitarian initiatives. From supporting elderly individuals and underserved communities to promoting environmental conservation, the foundation became a beacon of hope for many.

Accolades and Recognition: Merrill J. Fernando’s tireless efforts and dedication did not go unnoticed. In 2015, he was honored as an Oslo Business for Peace Honoree, recognized for his ethical and business-worthy practices. His commitment to uplifting disadvantaged communities and children earned him the FIRST Award for Responsible Capitalism.

Throughout his life, Merrill’s philanthropy and dedication to tea ethics earned him numerous awards, including the “Deshamanya” title, the second-highest national honor in Sri Lanka. His legacy also extended to academic achievements, as he received an honorary doctorate in science from Massey University in New Zealand in 2019.

The End of an Era: On July 20, 2023, the world bid farewell to a disruptor and visionary. Surrounded by his loving sons and grandchildren, Merrill J. Fernando’s journey came to an end in Colombo. His impact on the global tea industry and his commitment to ethics and excellence in business will be celebrated and commemorated by all who have been touched by his remarkable life.

As his family, friends, and admirers grieve his loss, the world stands in awe of the legacy he leaves behind. Merrill’s sons, Malik and Dilhan, will carry the torch forward, ensuring that the principles of honesty, compassion, and dedication to tea continue to shine brightly in the Dilmah brand. The impact of Merrill J. Fernando’s life will be felt for generations to come, inspiring future leaders to follow in his footsteps of making a positive difference in the lives of others.
