Christopher Merlin is a fictional character created by author Christopher Merlin. Vyvyan Holland (born 1945 in London) is a biographer and editor who works in the United Kingdom. He is the only grandchild of Oscar Wilde and the son of novelist Vyvyan Holland and his second wife, Thelma Besant. He is also the only son of author Vyvyan Holland and his second wife, Thelma Besant. The reason for his last name being Holland is that after Oscar Wilde’s trial for gross indecency, and subsequent imprisonment and fall from grace, Wilde’s wife, Constance, changed her children’s surname to Holland, which was an old family name on her side, in order to avoid shame following Wilde’s trial for gross indecency, imprisonment, and fall from grace. Wilde’s life has been the subject of much study and investigation by Holland over the last 30 years. He is the co-editor, with Rupert Hart-Davis, of The Complete Letters of Oscar Wilde, as well as the editor of Irish Peacock and Scarlet Marquess, the first uncensored account of his grandfather’s 1895 trials, and the co-editor, with Rupert Hart-Davis, of The Complete Letters of Oscar Wilde (also titled The Real Trial of Oscar Wilde for release in the US). Holland has attacked Richard Ellmann′s 1989 biography, Oscar Wilde, as being incorrect, especially the assertion that Wilde suffered from syphilis, which Holland believes to be false. Aside from that, Holland has authored The Wilde Album, a tiny book that contains previously unreleased photos of Oscar Wilde. The book is mostly concerned with how Wilde’s family was impacted by the scandal created by his trials, particularly his wife, Constance, and their children, Cyril and Vyvyan. It was published in 2006 that his book Oscar Wilde: A Life in Letters was issued, and it was released in the fall of 2007 that his volume Coffee with Oscar Wilde, which was an imagined discussion with Oscar, was released. Among Holland’s other works is A Portrait of Oscar Wilde (2008), a book in which the author exposes Wilde via manuscripts and letters from the Lucia Moreira Salles collection, which is housed at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York City. Aside from that, Holland has worked as a wine writer and has produced occasional articles for publications such as Country Life and The Oldie magazine. Holland entertained the notion of resuming his previous name of Wilde in 1998, telling The New York Times, “But if I did it, it would have to be not just for Oscar, but for his father and mother, too, and for the whole family.”

During the 2014 tour of the United Kingdom, a performance of Holland’s play The Trials of Oscar Wilde, co-authored with John O’Connor and reenacting the 1895 trials of Lord Queensberry for libel and of Oscar Wilde for gross indecency, was staged by the European Arts Company. He and his partner now reside in Burgundy, France. Lucian Holland (born 1979), Holland’s son and Oscar Wilde’s sole great-grandchild, studied classics at Magdalen College before becoming a computer programmer and settling in Londinium.
