Mendelson Joe was a Canadian singer songwriter, guitarist, painter, and political activist known for expressing political themes through his art.
Joe started playing as a solo artist in 1975 after assuming his current name. He frequently worked with artists like Ben Mink, Gwen Swick, and Colin Linden. Along with music, he started to establish himself as a contemporary artist, pursuing painting and frequently doing portraits of well-known musicians. His art was included in an exhibition in 1980 at the Canadian Cultural Centre in Paris, where it was coined “Dauntless Evidentiam.”
The face of Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney was overlaid on a pair of human buttocks in Joe’s most well-known painting. In 2005, Joe released a book of his pictures titled Joe’s Toronto. Joe had an appearance in the “Sunday in the Park” episode of Sharon, Lois & Bram’s Elephant Show from 1988. Around this time, MuchMusic heavily promoted the “Dance with Joe” music video, a novelty tune he had written and produced.
