Shechet graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Arts and the Rhode Island School of Design alongside a Master of Fine Arts in 1978. From 1978 to 1985.
Shechet taught at the Rhode Island School of Design and then from 1984 to 1995, at the Parsons School of Design. Shechet lived in TriBeCa for the majority of the 1990s, but in 2002 she moved to Woodstock, New York.
