Janelle Monae, The Rapper, Comes Out As NonBinary In New Interview
Since the beginning of their career, Janelle Monáe has been focused on pushing the boundaries of their music, their image, and themselves. The actress is ready to throw the gender binary out the window.
Monáe came up about their gender identification in the most recent episode of Red Table Talk, hosted by Jada Pinkett Smith, openly coming out as non-binary.
She told Smith, who was joined by her co-hosts and family members Willow Smith and Adrienne Banfield-Norris that she is non-binary and doesn’t identify herself simply as a woman. “I have the impression that God is far larger than ‘he or she.'” I am everything if I am from God.”
However, the actress was keen to clarify that just because they no longer identify as a woman does not mean they have abandoned their devotion to feminism and female empowerment.
The singer of Dirty Computer has previously hinted at their non-binary status. The star used the hashtag “#IAmNonbinary” in January 2020, prompting many followers to believe they had formally come out. In a following interview with The Cut, Monáe explained that tweeting the hashtag was more of support for the community than a declaration of self-identity.
