Hildebrand began racing to go karts at Infineon Raceway in Northern California when he was 14 years old in the Jim Russell Arrive and Drive Championship. He won his maiden race, but he also won the championship.
He finished second in the Jr. 80cc Shifter class in 2003 and then transitioned from karts to cars by winning the Jim Russell Graduate Runoffs at the end of the year, driving in Formula Russell in 2004. He went on to win the series championship and compete in the Red Bull Driver Search the following year.
